Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, April 24th through Sunday April 30th. Story Forge What: Gaming, Writing When: Tuesday, April 25th at 6:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ This monthly event by local tech nonprofit Glitch focuses on teaching the art of storytelling in games. This event focuses on the special challenges of writing for interactive fiction and provides a space where game storytellers can meet and work together. Every skill level is welcome. Knitting Social What: Crafting, Meeting When: Tuesday, April 25th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Minnesota History Center Get social and hang out with fellow knitters at the Minnesota History Center. This event is an opportunity to hang out, knit, and chat with other folks, so bring a project and be ready to hang out. The group meets in a circle on the third floor of the center. Needles and yarn are available. Geek Date Night: Freddy vs. Jason What: Movies, Screening, Trivia When: Tuesday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Clubhouse Jäger Geek Date Night is hosting a screening of Freddy Vs. Jason at Clubhouse Jäger. Compete in premovie trivia with Rob Callahan at 7:00 for a chance to win a $50 bar tab, then stay at 9:00 for a screening of the ultimate showdown between 80s horror icons. YogaQuest Continues: Spirited Away What: Sports & Fitness When: Tuesday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. Be enchanted by with this week's theme: Spirited Away. Yoga For Creativity What: Sports & Fitness, Crafting When: Wednesday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio This is a six-week class intended to use the flow of yoga to get your creative juices flowing. This class features a mix of hatha and restorative yoga, and provides a creative outlet at the same time. The $15 cost covers the class, and provides access to markers and paper to express yourself. Pearls Before Swine in Minneapolis What: Comics When: Wednesday April 26th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Magers and Quinn Come for a free informal talk with Stephan Pastis, the creative force behind Pearls Before Swine, who will speak about the most and least popular strips throughout the years and the creative process behind them. The author will be signing copies of his new work, Peal Hogs the Road. Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday What: Meetup, Trivia When: Wednesday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Driftwood Char Bar Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quick. Crafty Geek/Make it Sew What: Crafting, Meetup When: Thursday, April 27th at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” Can Can Wonderland Variety Show What: Arts When: Thursday, April 27th at 9:00 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland Can Can Wonderland presents a weekly variety show. The night will play out in four acts, with musical accompaniment from a house band and local celebrity hosts. You never know what you’re in for. This is a 21+ event. Weekly Comics Chat What: Meetup, Comics When: Thursday, April 27th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Kitty Cat Klub The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join. Friday Night Magic What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, April 28th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Mischief Toy Store Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. International Tabletop Day at Level Up What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, April 28th at 5:00 p.m.–Sunday, April 30th at 10:00 p.m. Where: Level Up Games Celebrate International Tabletop Day with a whole weekend full of events at Level Up Games. There are a variety of happenings throughout the weekend, including organized game tournaments, publisher demos, open gaming, Pro Dice Circuit, and more. See the event listing for schedule details. Some organized events require a donation. St. Paul Art Crawl What:Arts, Meetup When: Friday April 28th at 6:00 p.m. through Sunday, April 30th at 5:00 p.m. Where: Locations throughout St. Paul Take advantage of the Minnesota spring weather and crawl through St. Paul, exploring all that it has to offer in the way of art and artists studios. This event sprawls throughout the city, with over 30 locations and hundreds of participating artists throughout the weekend. There will be live music, artists demonstrations, participatory events, studio tours and more. See the website for details on locations, schedule, parking and more. Tsuinishi Anime Club What: Meetup, Anime When: Friday, April 28th at 8:30 p.m. Where: Geek Partnership Society Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series. Cosplayers/Costumers Social Hour at Ground Zero What:Meetup, Cosplay When: Friday, April 28th at 10:00 p.m. Where: Ground Zero Nightclub At this social event for cosplayers, costumers, and other crafters, you can “talk about how-tos, where-do-you-gets, and anything else cosplay/costuming, or just life in general.” Meet up, have a drink, and hit the dance floor. The gathering officially ends at 11:30, but you can stick around afterwards for the midnight lip-sync contest. No cover if you’re in costume. Halfway to Halloween What: Cosplay, Nightlife When: Friday, April 28th at 10:00 p.m. Where: Ground Zero Nightclub Celebrate the halfway point to Halloween by dressing up in costume and dancing the night away as if it was a chilly night in October. This is your best chance to dance with ghouls and ghosts in the spring, if that's your thing. Costumes are highly encouraged, and those choosing to attend without a costume will need a $5 cover. Independent Bookstore Day What: Books When: Saturday, April 29th Where: Bookstores throughout Minnesota Indie bookshops around the state (and beyond) will be celebrating Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday with sales, promotions, readings, refreshments, and more. Level Up What: Sports & Fitness When: Saturday, April 29th at 8:30 a.m. Where: YQdio After gaining all of this experience with various yoga poses, you’ve earned the right to level up and dive deeper into familiar poses, and even learn new feats (poses). There is a $15 charge for this advanced class. Saturday Morning Cartoons What: Sports & Fitness, Meetup When: Saturday, April 29th at 10:00 a.m. Where: YQdio Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.” International Craftsaganza What: Crafting, Meetup, Educational When: Saturday, April 29th at 10:00 a.m. Where: MN State Fairgrounds The Craftstravaganza is an entire day's worth of free fun for crafty geeks. This is the 12th annual event, and features free workshops and activities. There should be plenty of free parking available for this day of fun in Saint Paul. International Tabletop Day at the Source What: Gaming When: Saturday, April 29th at 10:00 a.m. Where: The Source Comics and Games The Source will also be participating in International Tabletop Day, and will have events scheduled all day for a variety of games. Whether you're into card games, story games, board games, strategy or role-playing (and probably more), you'll be covered at the source. Expect special guests, gift bags and more for this special event. Events will be scheduled all day, check the Source for more info and the game room schedule. Launch Party for Renaissance Calling What: Books When: Saturday, April 29th at 11:00 a.m. Where: Rose Vine Hall Come to Rose Vine Hall for a party to celebrate the release of Michael Bernabo's book Renaissance Calling. This event will include readings from the book as well as the inside scoop on some of the story-building process. Artists at Byte What: Arts, Meetup When: Saturday, April 29th at 4:00 p.m. Where: Byte Come to geek-friendly bar Byte, (or stay after international tabletop day events), and enjoy a chance to meet and mingle with three creators of beautiful and geeky art: Christine Mitzuk, Holly Chamas, and Chris Nichols. Crimson Peaks and Gothic Spectres: Tea and Ghost Stories What: Cosplay, Books, Tea When: Saturday, April 29th at 5:00 p.m. Where: Bingley's Teas Enjoy a cup of tea and hear tales of ghosts and mystery. Local author Catherine Lundoff (who was interviewed for Twin Cities Geek last year) has organized this event, which will be hosted at Bingley's Teas (also featured here on the site). The event is free, and a great opportunity to hear some of Lundoff's ghost stories, and some of her favorites from other writers. The forecast for April 29th calls for rain, and what better way to spend a rainy evening than listening to ghost stories? Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show What: Screenings, Theater & Comedy When: Saturday, April 29th at 11:59 p.m. Where: Uptown Theatre At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Shieldmaiden Sundays What: Gaming, Meetup When: Sunday, April 30th at 12:00 p.m. Where: The Source Comics and Games Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Gender Jam What: Meetup, Comics, Gaming When: Sunday, April 30th at 12:45 p.m. Where: Dreamers Vault Games Gender Jam is a safe social meetup for trans, gender-nonconforming, and questioning youth hosted at Dreamers Vault Games for video games, board games, snacks, and togetherness. A D&D campaign is likely to be in the works. Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on the Twin Cities Geek Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) or visit Gender Jam on Facebook for more information.
