Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, March 20th through Sunday, March 27th. Figure Drawing Salon What: Arts When: Monday, March 20th at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Center at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is “to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.” Tabletop Tuesdays What: Gaming, Meetup When: Tuesday, March 21st at 5:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ In this casual game night, bring your own games or make use of Glitch’s tabletop game library. Organizers will be there to help teach games, and all skill levels are encouraged to attend. United Geeks of Gaming at Byte What: Gaming, Meetup When: Tuesday, March 21st at 5:00 p.m. Where: Byte United Geeks of Gaming are trying a new location for their meetup, the geek-friendly (and socially conscious) new bar and restaurant Byte. The establishment has some games on hand, and folks are encouraged to bring their own as well. (Click here for our article on this new restaurant!) Café Scientifique What: Educational When: Tuesday, March 21st at 7:00 p.m. Where: Bryant Lake Bowl Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s theme is “Hunting Knowledge and Gathering Herbs: Rastafari Bush Doctors in South Africa” with Lisa Aston Philander, curator of the College of Biological Sciences Conservatory and adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Minnesota. Meet the Finalists for the Minnesota Book Awards What: Books, Readings When: Tuesday, March 21st at 6:00 p.m. Where: Open Book The Minnesota Book Awards and Loft Literary Center present a celebration of this years finalist books. There will be a reception, a quick Q&A session with the finalists, and a time for wine, dessert and mingling. YogaQuest Continues: Power Rangers What: Sports & Fitness When: Tuesday, March 21st at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. Prepare yourself for the upcoming film, or just feel powerful, with this week's theme: Power Rangers! The Not-So-Silent Planet What: Arts When: Tuesday, March 21st at 8:30 p.m. Where: Kieran’s Irish Pub The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers will be hosting its monthly speculative open-mic session, the Twin Cities’ “first open-mic dedicated to speculative interpretations of myth,” at Kieran’s Irish Pub this Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. (doors and sign-up at 8:00). The featured performer for this month’s session is Shanan Custer; others are invited to perform for five- to seven-minute sets and tell attendees about worlds “whose laws of physics differ from our own” and places “of which we’ve never dreamt.” Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday What: Meetup, Trivia When: Wednesday, March 22nd at 7:00 p.m. Where: Driftwood Char Bar Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quick. Crafty Geek/Make it Sew What: Crafting, Meetup When: Thursday, March 23rd at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” Adventures in Can Can Wonderland What: Nightlife When: Thursday, March 23rd at 7:00 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland Experience a night of fun and exploration at Can Can Wonderland—the new minigolf course, bar, and entertainment venue recently profiled here on the site. You'll receive a map upon arrival and will be invited to explore a world inspired by Lewis Carroll's works. The night offers minigolf, smoking caterpillars, and more for $12. Can Can Wonderland Variety Show What: Nightlife, Arts and Theater When: Thursday, March 23rd at 9:00 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland Another event at Can Can Wonderland is its weekly variety show. The night will play out in four acts, with musical accompaniment from a house band and local celebrity hosts. You never know what you're in for. This is a 21+ event. Weekly Comics Chat What: Meetup, Comics When: Thursday, March 23rd at 7:00 p.m. Where: Kitty Cat Klub The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join. Friday Night Magic What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, March 24th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Mischief Toy Store Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came What: Arts and Theater When: Friday, March 24th, and Saturday, March 25th at 7:30 p.m. Where: The Historic Mounds Theatre Fans of theater and The Dark Tower will be in for a treat with this play based on the same inspiration as Stephen King’s series: a poem by Robert Browning. In the play, Roland travels with a Seer into mystical and blighted lands to save his sister. Performances run through 25th and are listed in more detail on the event site. Tickets are $15 to $25. Rent Hamilton's Wicked Cats: A Villification Tennis Musical What: Comedy When: Friday, March 24th at 10:00 p.m. Where: Bryant Lake Bowl and Theater Don't throw away your shot to enjoy a night of Broadway-themed comedy from Vilification Tennis. Learn comedy truths at Vilification's most ambitions show in years! Tickets are $15 at the door or $12 in advance. Doors are at 9:30, show is at 10. Ramsey After Dark: Crime and Justice What: Educational, Meetup When: Friday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Where: Alexander Ramsey House Take a deep dive into the world of 19th-century crime and punishment with this event put on by the Minnesota Historical Society. Learn about this world through court testimony, newspaper articles, and more, focusing on the case of St. Paul's Ann Bilansky, a woman accused of murdering her husband. This event is intended for those 18 years or older, and tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and students; MNHS members get a $2 discount. Lounge 2.0 What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, March 24th at 6:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ Lounge 2.0 is a get-together for people who are passionate about games and want to spend their Friday nights in like-minded company. Glitch offers consoles, PC stations, and tabletop and digital games. If you're passionate about a game, bring it to share with the community. Tsuinishi Anime Club What: Meetup, Anime When: Friday, March 24th at 8:30 p.m. Where: Geek Partnership Society Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series. Cosplayers/Costumers Social Hour at Ground Zero What:Meetup, Cosplay When: Friday, March 24th at 10:00 p.m. Where: Ground Zero Nightclub At this social event for cosplayers, costumers, and other crafters, you can “talk about how-tos, where-do-you-gets, and anything else cosplay/costuming, or just life in general.” Meet up, have a drink, and hit the dance floor. The gathering officially ends at 11:30, but you can stick around afterwards for the midnight lip-sync contest. No cover if you’re in costume. Gryffindorks 10k and SPEW Meet-Up What: Sports and Fitness, Cosplay, Meetup When: Saturday, March 25th at 10:00 a.m. Where: 4200 Queen Ave S, Minneapolis Come on down for a fun meetup and 10k with Gryffindorks and the Hogwarts Running Club. Preregistration and new sock donations for the House Elves are recommended. Saturday Morning Cartoons What: Sports & Fitness, Meetup When: Saturday, March 25th at 10:00 a.m. Where: YQdio Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.” Anime Double Feature What: Screening When: Saturday, March 25th at 4:00 p.m. Where: Geek Partnership Society Anime Twin Cities is partnering with Funimation for an exciting double screening of The Boy Who Leapt through Time and The Boy and the Beast, both award-winning films from Mamoru Hosoda. This is a free all-ages event, with popcorn for 25¢ and other snacks at similar prices. Book Release Party for A Field Guide to Dragons What: Books When: Saturday, March 25th at 5:30 p.m. Where: Minnsky Theatre The Minnsky Theatre will be hosting an evening to celebrate the release of A Field Guide to Dragons, Wyrms, and Serpents of the World. There will be a cocktail hour, a book signing, readings from the book, circus performers, dancers, and a meet and greet. A Fond Farewell to Sidhe Brewing Company What: Meetup, Nightlife When: Saturday, March 25th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Sidhe Brewing Company Come bid adieu to Sidhe Brewing Company, which is closing its doors, with a night of music from the Alein Whalers and Bardmageddon. Enjoy the music and the beer for a last time. North Star Roller Girls What: Sports & Fitness When: Saturday, March 25th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Lee and Rose Coliseum Come and see competitive roller derby for Bout 4: Purple Rain. Tickets range from $10-15 for this night of fun for all. The Banger Sisters will be matched against the Violent Femmes, and Delta Delta Di will face off against the Kilmore Girls, for a night you won't soon forget. Comic Creator Meet-Up What: Comics, Meetup When: Sunday, March 26th at 10:00 a.m. Where: Mead Hall Mead Hall Games in South Minneapolis is hosting an event for local comics creators to let people get in touch with the local scene. All types of creators are welcome to this free and family friendly event. Feel free to bring some of your work to share. Women Who Write What: Books, Meetup When: Sunday, March 26th at 1:00 p.m. Where: Elmer Andersen Library Quatrefoil Library is hosting a get-together for women writers and their fans. Writers this year include Catherine Lundoff (profiled here on TCG last year), Mary Stein, Kirstin Cronn-Mills, and more. The event will begin with a reading, followed up with a time for book signing and conversation. Children's Concert with the Saint Paul Civic Symphony What:Concert, Theater and Arts When: Sunday, March 26th at 2:00 p.m. Where: Mount Zion Temple Artstart and ArtScraps present an afternoon of fun for the whole family centered around a concert. The event posits the question of what would happen if the characters from Star Wars were to attend a classical music concert. Unique concept aside, this event includes art activities, dancers and a concert. Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show What: Movie, Meetup When: Saturday, March 25th at 11:59 p.m. Where: Uptown Theatre At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Shieldmaiden Sunday What: Gaming, Meetup When: Sunday, March 26th at 12:00 p.m. Where: The Source Comics and Games Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at the Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Gender Jam What: Meetup, Comics, Gaming When: Sunday, March 26th at 12:45 p.m. Where: Dreamers Vault Games Gender Jam is a safe social meetup for trans, gender-nonconforming, and questioning youth hosted at Dreamers Vault Games for video games, board games, snacks, and togetherness. A D&D campaign is likely to be in the works.
