Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, January 2nd through Sunday, January 8th. Books and Bars: The Kind Worth Killing What: Books, Meetup When: Tuesday, January 3rd at 6:15 p.m. Where: The Happy Gnome Books & Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson Tabletop Tuesdays What: Gaming, Meetup When: Tuesday, January 3rd at 5:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ In this casual game night, bring your own games or make use of Glitch’s tabletop game library. Organizers will be there to help teach games, and all skill levels are encouraged to attend. YogaQuest Continues: Sherlock What: Sport & Fitness When: Tuesday, January 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Sherlock! WISL Presents: Shoutout to my Ex What: Nightlife, Meetup, When: Wednesday, January 4th at 9:30 p.m. and Thursday, January 5th at 9:30 p.m. Where: Honey Come see local musicians and support Why is She Laughing, an organization dedicated to providing support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. There are two nights for this event, Wednesday and Thursday, both at Honey in Minneapolis. Geek Slink Belly Dance Classes What: Arts, Sport & Fitness When: Thursday, January 5th at 6:30 p.m. Where: YQdio Belly dance classes with instructor Shannon Townsend for beginners and intermediate dancers. The beginner class is at 6:30 p.m. while the intermediate group meets at 7:30 p.m., with all body types and ages accepted. Crafty Geek/Make It Sew What: Crafting, Meetup When: Thursday, January 5th at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” One-Shot Comics: March What: Meetup, Comics When: Thursday, January 5th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Moon Palace Books One-Shot Comics (formerly known as the Beer + Comics book club) meets monthly at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis to discuss a selected comic or graphic novel. November’s pick is the graphic novel March by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell. Weekly Comics Chat What: Meetup, Comics When: Thursday, January 5th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Kitty Cat Klub The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join. FSA BattleTech Tabletop What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, January 6th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech. GPS Open Gaming What: Gaming, Meetup When: Saturday, January 7th at 10:00 a.m. Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the groups has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well. Saturday Morning Cartoons What: Sports & Fitness, Screening, TV When: Saturday, January 7th at 10:00 a.m. Where: YQdio Yet another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.” We Are Family! (A Fundraiser) What: Meetup, Nightlife When: Saturday, January 7th at 7:00 p.m. Where: The Hook and Ladder Theater and Lounge Twin Cities musicians, artists, and writers are coming together to help out the Weinand family, who have had a tough year between medical concerns and sudden job loss. Local DJ Apollolypstic will put on this show with sliding scale donations at the door, all benefiting this family. There will be a raffle for door prizes as well. Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show What: Movie, Meetup When: Saturday, January 7th at 11:45 p.m. Where: Uptown Theatre At 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Shieldmaiden Sunday What: Gaming, Meetup, Cosplay, Comics When: Sunday, January 8th at 12:00 p.m. Where: The Source Comics and Games Shieldmaiden Sundays are a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at the Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to game, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. The Omega Man What: Movies, Screenings When: Sunday, January 8th at 3:00 p.m. Where: Trylon Microcinema In a screening of the Charlton Heston classic Omega Man, see Dr. Robert Neville traverse a postapocalyptic Los Angeles by day and fend off homicidal mutants by night. The film is an adaptation of the classic science fiction novel I Am Legend. Sherlock Viewing Party What: TV, Screenings When: Sunday, January 8th at 5:00 p.m. Where: Twin Cities PBS The Twin Cities' local PBS station is hosting a free party where you can view the first two episodes of the new season of Sherlock—plus enjoy a cash bar, photo booth, trivia, and more. The event starts at 5:00 and the first screening starts at 6:00. PBS notes, "Tickets are free but limited, be sure to RSVP today!" So, which of these events will you be attending?
