Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, January 16th through Sunday, January 22nd. Figure Drawing Salon What: Arts When: Monday, December 19th at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Center at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is “to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.” Game Night at Metro State University What: Meetup, Gaming When: Tuesday, January 17th at 4:00 p.m. Where: Metro State Library, 1st Floor Student Lounge The Metro State library hosts a monthly meetup for video-game and board-game enthusiasts. This free event lasts from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and features a small library of retro and newer video games, as well as a variety of board games. Game on! YogaQuest Continues: Supernatural What: Sports & Fitness When: Tuesday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is Supernatural! Café Scientifique What: Educational When: Tuesday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Bryant Lake Bowl Café Scientifique, presented by the Bell Museum of Natural History, is “a happy hour exchange of ideas about science, environment, and popular culture featuring experts from a variety of fields on diverse and often provocative topics.” This month’s theme is “The Beautiful Problem of Turbulence” with Sam Stewart, a PhD student in mathematics and fluid dynamics. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. The Not-So-Silent Planet What: Arts When: Tuesday, January 17th at 8:00 p.m. Where: Kieran's Irish Pub The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers will be hosting its monthly speculative open-mic session, the Twin Cities’ “first open-mic dedicated to speculative interpretations of myth,” at Kieran’s Irish Pub this Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. (doors and sign-up at 8:00). The featured performer for this month’s session is Matthew Foster; others are invited to perform for five- to seven-minute sets and tell attendees about worlds “whose laws of physics differ from our own” and places “of which we’ve never dreamt.” Writers in Conversation What: Books, Arts When: Tuesday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m. Where: The AZ Gallery Writers in Conversation presents a panel discussion about women in sci fi and writing female protagonists at the AZ Gallery in St. Paul. The panelists for this event are Victorya Chase, Abra Staffin-Wiebe (writer of A Circus of Brass and Bone), and Lyda Morehouse. GothiCoffee What: Meetup When: Wednesday, January 18th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Espresso Royale Café The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is “a community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).” Trash Film Debauchery: Ginger Snaps What: Screening, Movies When:Wednesday, January 18th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Trylon Microcinema Trash Film Debauchery presents Ginger Snaps, the second in a series screenings of werewolf films. This film takes the lens of lycanthropy and applies it to outcast suburban teens. Weekly Comics Chat What: Comics, Meetup When: Thursday, January 19th at 6:30 p.m. Where: Kitty Cat Club The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join. Crafty Geek/Make It Sew: Stash Swap What: Meetup, Crafting When: Thursday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Waterbury Center The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” This week is a great opportunity to trade your unwanted crafting supplies with other geeks. Dive-In Movie What: Movies, Screening When: Friday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Shoreview Community Center The Tropics Indoor Waterpark at the Shoreview Community Center invites you to "relax on giant sea creatures or lounge on pool-side chairs while watching a family-friendly movie." Admission is included with the purchase of a daily pass; call (651) 490-4750 to learn which movie is playing. Gamecraft 2017 What: Meetup, Gaming When: Friday, January 20th–Sunday January 22nd Where: Rapson Courtyard, University of Minnesota Gamecraft is the place to be for collaborative game design. Glitch will be hosting 200+ game designers, writers, artists and developers from around the Midwest who will be taking part in the Global Game Jam. This is an intense event where you will work with a team to develop a game in 48 hours. See the website for more schedule related details. Tickets for entry are $30 ($25 for students), and all skill levels are welcome. Those under 18 need an adult. Saturday Morning Cartoons What: Sports & Fitness, Screening When: Saturday, January 21st at 10:00 a.m Where: YQdio Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.” Open Gaming What: Gaming, Meetup When: Saturday, January 21st at 10:00 a.m. Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its Open Gaming session, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the groups has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well. Shieldmaiden Sundays What: Gaming, Meetup When: Sunday, January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. Where: The Source Comics and Games Shieldmaiden Sundays are a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at the Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to game, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Logan's Run What: Movies, Screenings When: Sunday, January 22nd at 3:00 p.m. Where: Trylon Microcinema At another screening at the Trylon this week, learn what those messages you've been receiving to go to "Carousel" actually mean in ’70s dystopian classic Logan's Run. This is part of a series of dystopian sci-fi films screening throughout January, so check the theater website for more showings. January Adult Night out at the Zoo What: Meetup, Educational When: Sunday, January 22nd at 4:30 p.m. Where: Minnesota Zoo At this 18+ event, enjoy the Minnesota Zoo after hours with cocktails and talks by zookeepers. Admission is $10, or free for members. There will also be "special animal encounters at 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. along our Tropics Trail." So, which of these events will you be attending?
