Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, December 12th through Sunday, December 18th. Books and Bars: Fates and Furies What: Books, Meetup When: Tuesday, December 5th at 6:15 p.m. Where: Indeed Tap Room Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Fates and Furies by Lauren Graff. Book Discussion: Hild What: Books, Meetup When: Tuesday, December 13th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Quatrefoil Library Join the North Country Gaylaxians for a discussion of Hild, a novel by Nicola Griffith telling the tale of Saint Hilda of Whitby, a curious and bright child who is destined to become a pivotal figure in the early Middle Ages. Feminist Comic Book Club: In Real Life What: Meetup, Comics When: Tuesday, December 13th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Mischief Toy Store The Feminist Comic Book Club will meet at Mischief Toy Store for the group's bimonthly discussion, intended for anyone who loves comics and identifies as a feminist. The comic they'll be discussing is In Real Life by Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang. YogaQuest Continues: Die Hard What: Sport & Fitness When: Tuesday, December 13th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. Keeping with the holiday spirit, this week's theme is Die Hard. The 10th Annual Star Wars Holiday Special and Toys for Tots Benefit What: Screening, Movies When: Wednesday, December 14th at 4:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl “’Twill be the day before Rogue One,” and the Bryant-Lake Bowl is be hosting its 10th annual Star Wars Holiday Special and Toys for Tots Benefit on December 14th. Admission is free with a donated toy, and tickets are available at noon at the Bryant-Lake Bowl starting at noon on Wednesday. TC Trek Trivia: Holi-Deck What: Trivia, Movies, TV When: Wednesday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Driftwood Char Bar Hosted by “Master Trekkie” (featured in our article “Meet Minnesota Cosplayers”), TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks and a whole lot of Trek!” Elf-Care: Treat Yo Self What: Sport & Fitness When: Wednesday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Stay focused and grounded in order to handle holiday stress. This is the fifth in YogaQuest’s Elf-Care: Self-Care Boot Camp for the Holidays, a six-class series aimed at keeping you healthy during the holidays. This week will find ways to help you be kind to yourself in the face of stress. The Lost Arcade Minneapolis Premiere What: Screening, Movies, Gaming When: Thursday, December 15th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Trylon Microcinema The Trylon Microcinema, with support from Up-Down Minneapolis, is hosting a premiere screening of The Lost Arcade, a film that memorializes the end of video arcades in New York City, especially focused on the Chinatown Fair. Weekly Comics Chat What: Meetup, Comics When: Thursday, December 15th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Kitty Cat Klub The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join. Crafty Geek/Make It Sew What: Crafting, Meetup When: Thursday, December 15th at 6:30 p.m. Where: Waterbury Center The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” This week's special focus is on bean art. Double-Blind Improv What: Arts, Theater & Comedy When: Thursday, December 15th at 7:30 p.m. Where: Honey Double-Blind Improv, presented by Fearless Comedy Productions, is “a short-form improv show where you never know what might happen because neither do we!” Performers and improv games are chosen at random during the show. This show takes place on the third Thursday of every month. Friday Night Magic: Booster Draft Event What: Meetup, Gaming When: Friday, December 16th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Mischief Toy Store Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night with a special booster draft. Entry is $15; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Friday Night Special: The Nightmare Before Christmas What: Movies & Films, Health & Fitness When: Friday, December 9th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Join YogaQuest for a Yoga-Along to geeky holiday classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. The event will focus on Vinyasa flow, and there is a minimum $10 donation to attend. Open Gaming What: Meetup, Gaming When: Saturday, December 17th at 10:00 a.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its Open Gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited in order to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the groups has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well.
