Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, November 21st through Sunday, November 27th. Figure Drawing Salon What: Meetup, Arts When: Monday, November 21st at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a Figure Drawing Salon at the Waterbury Center at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is “to cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.” Geek Date Night: Grosse Point Blank What: Movies, Screening, Trivia When: Tuesday, November 22nd at 7:00 p.m. Where: Clubhouse Jäger Geek Date Night is hosting a screening of Grosse Point Blank at Clubhouse Jäger. Compete in premovie trivia with Rob Callahan at 7:00 for a chance to win a $50 bar tab, then stay at 9:00 for a screening of the ultimate in ’80s nostalgia action thrillers: Grosse Pointe Blank! YogaQuest Continues: Steven Universe What: Sport & Fitness When: Tuesday, November 22nd at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week's focus is Steven Universe. Elf-Care: My Neck, My Back What: Sport & Fitness When: Wednesday, November 16th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Stay focused and grounded in order to handle holiday stress. This is the second in YogaQuest’s Elf-Care: Self-Care Boot Camp for the Holidays series, a six-class series aimed at keeping you healthy during the holidays. Crafty Geek/Make It Sew What: Meetup, Crafting When: Thursday, November 24 at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” Museum Garage Sale What: Meetup, Shopping, Educational When: Friday, November 25th–Sunday, November 27th Where: Bell Museum of Natural History Take part in the Bell Museum's "garage sale," where you find exciting ephemera like exhibit posters, craft supplies, books, overstock merchandise, and decorations. The sale runs 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. on Friday; 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday; and 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Tsuinshi Anime Club What: Meetup, Anime When: Friday, November 25th at 8:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club,” and at which they will show various anime movies and series. Yule Regret This: The Vilification Tennis War on Christmas What: Theater & Comedy When: Saturday, November 26th at 10:00 p.m. Where: Bryant-Lake Bowl Insult-battle improv group Vilification Tennis is taking on the holidays with a Christmas-themed show for Thanksgiving weekend. "We will stick to calling it Christmas and you can bet we'll be giving the holiday far less respect than it deserves." Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show What: Movie, Meetup When: Saturday, November 26th at 11:45 p.m. Where: Uptown Theatre At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Viking Martial Arts: 1 on 1 Training What: Sports & Fitness When: Saturday, November 26th at 8:00 a.m. Where: TBD (see event page) Ásfólk Viking martial-arts group is hosting one-on-one or one-on-two training sessions tailored to individual needs, which can cover a variety of viking weapons and shield use, including spears, axes and swords. This 45-minute session costs $50, and participants must sign a liability waiver. As of this writing, the location hasn't been finalized yet, so keep an eye on the Facebook event page. Black Hat Collective What: Comics, Meetup When: Saturday, November 26th at 1:00 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Black Hat Collective is a Twin Cities–based group of comic creators that meets quarterly on the fourth Saturday of the month in February, May, August, and November. This is an 18+ meetup due to potential adult themes. The Black Hat Collective aims to produce weird little comics and provide constructive critique to members. Gender Jam What: Meetup, Comics, Gaming When: Sunday, November 27th at 12:45 p.m. Where: Dreamers Vault Games Gender Jam is a safe social meetup for trans, gender-nonconforming, and questioning youth hosted at Dreamers Vault Games for video games, board games, snacks, and togetherness. A D&D campaign is likely to be in the works. Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on the Twin Cities Geek Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) or visit Gender Jam on Facebook for more information. The Journeyfolk of Fandom Workshop: Documentation What: Education, Meetup When: Sunday, November 27th at 1:45 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Journeyfolk of Fandom (JoF) workshop is part of GPS’s Classroom Series. It is for people at all levels of running conventions and other geek organization: “We believe that everyone has something to learn and to share.” So, which of these events will you be attending?
