Geeky Parents to Be: DYI Mario Chain Chomp Halloween Costume
All Hallows' Eve can be a time of year for couples to go out, have a good time, and dress up as a pair: salt and pepper shakers, the Joker and Harley Quinn, and Ken and Barbie are just a few possibilities. As easy as those ideas sound (who am I kidding they are not that easy), coming up with a geeky, comfortable costume idea to share with my pregnant wife this year was not proving so easy. I needed a little inspiration. Luckily for me, I have a Nintendo 3DS with Mario Kart 7. You might be wondering, "What sort of idea can you get from that?" Well, Rainbow Road—I will wait for you to stop cursing about falling off the edge—has rolling Chain Chomps on it. That got me thinking, and I and concluded that a Chain Chomp costume would be super fun. Luckily for me, my wife agreed. And so the project began. I started with a blank black shirt as my canvas. Finding the right dimensions was rather difficult; I had my wife try on the shirt and, using some masking tape, marked some nice guidelines on where to start. I was not about to ask her to stand there for 15 to 20 minutes to try and trace outlines on her with a Sharpie. Having been around her for the whole of this pregnancy—I'm her husband, it's what I do—I have learned that standing that long takes its toll. From there, I worked my way to the mouth of the costume. Can you see the Chain Chomp yet? As I continued working, it became apparent that I was going to run through quite a bit of hot glue. (I may or may not have gotten a bit of hot glue on my fingers and had to grab a cold drink to cool them off. If you are going to attempt this, you might as well start with a cold drink handy.) After trimming the mouth down, I rounded out the top and bottom of it. I then cut out three circles to make the whites of its eyes, the pupils, and that one little shiny reflection spot. You may be wondering, at what point did you wife come back into play? Well, considering this was all for her—who am I kidding, it was just as much for me—she had to try on the finished product. So, with my wife successfully dressed as a Chain Chomp, am I going to be one of the other characters, like Luigi, Princess Peach, or Bullet Bill? In fact, I am not going to be any of the characters. I will be (drum roll please) . . . . the post holding her to the ground. I've already started working on the chain. Please tell me what you think in the comments below. If you have any other reasonably easy (or more ambitious) costume ideas for a pregnant someone, leave those below as well!
