Was it you whoHung a gate withNo fence andLatched it closed,Guarding only grassAnd July heat?Something told meI should ask.We’ve passed inOur cars of course,As close to talkingAs often occurs—Each feelingThe anxious spaceOf un-gardens,Un-fields,And that voice,Insisting we completeWhat we don’t knowWhy we started.
