Hillsborough Verdict: 96 unlawfully killed | LSRadio - Liverpool Student Radio
The jury at the inquest for the Hillsborough Disaster has concluded that planning and police response were at fault, not the fans. As the verdict was revealed at 11am, the Liverpool Echo reported that there were "cries of joy in the packed courtroom." 96 fans died in the 1989 crush, with accusations that the fans were to blame having been fought against for 27 years. In finding the 96 victims to have been unlawfully killed, the Liverpool Echo reports that the jury were told : "In order to answer 'yes' to that question , you would have to be sure that David Duckenfield, the match commander, was responsible for the manslaughter by gross negligence of those 96 people." The verdict of unlawful killing comes following Lord Justice Goldring expressing that he would accept a majority verdict on the subject - seven members of the jury had to agree.
