MACK PASSES: ISU Journalism Professor Dies
Iowa State journalism professor Barbara Mack passed away Thursday morning at her home in Des Moines. She was 59.Mack was an assistant director and associate professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism at the time of her death and was easing into retirement. This semester would have been her last teaching.Mack’s husband, Jim Giles, says she had been taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon after he found her inarticulate and pounding on a bedside table. He says she thought she was having a heart attack. At the hospital, testing showed no signs of a heart attack and she went home.Giles says Mack was suffering from pain in her neck and took some pain relievers that had been prescribed to her. She went to sleep on a recliner and Giles checked on her during the night and she appeared to be fine. When he checked on her around 5:30 a.m. he found she had passed away.Mack served as general counsel to The Des Moines Register before she began teaching at Iowa State University in the Greenlee School in 1986.Services in Des Moines and Ames are planned but details are still being determined.
