We all remember going to the skating rink as a kid trying to skate as fast as possible without falling down.Then there were the big kids and all they wanted to do was knock you down. Welcome to roller derby, for men."The first thing I get asked is ‘what kind of costumes do you wear,” says Stevie Williams. There’s no costumes, just a helmet, pads, and skates.It has wide appeal, "we've got guys who skated occasionally growing up,” says Dante Peak, “and by occasionally I mean 2-3 times in their life."According to Tony Muse, it’s a growing niche sport that combines speed, power and toughness, "roller derby is one of the most physical things I’ve ever done."William adds, "We have a guy on the team; fell over backwards, took a skate to the back, cracked 2 vertebrae."Just like women’s roller derby, every skater has a nickname, which is sure to intimidate.This isn't just a weekend get together at the rink. This is serious; the team from Des Moines is national champions. Des Moines hosts the national champions for roller derby. Their team name, Your Mom. "It’s a shot back at people because they didn't like us when we started playing," explains William.The next time someone asks 'what's unique about Des Moines?"Simple. Your Mom.After winning the national championship Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie signed a proclamation designating December 8th as 'Your Mom, men’s roller derby day.'
