AGRIBUSINESS: Benefits Of Shorter Weaning Days For Calves
Calves take one of the longest times to wean out of all farm animals, about 215 days. A new study done by the USDA Agriculture Research Service said that weaning a calf at 80 days during drought years can increase production. The study included two groups of cattle weaned at different days. The study found that calves weaned earlier weighed more and were in better body condition by winter. This reduced the amount of harvested feed needed by cattle.
