TIME’s new cover: shocking photo sparks parenting debate
TIME Magazine’s latest cover has a lot of people raising their eyebrows. It depicts a mother breastfeeding her 3-year-old child, accompanied by the caption, ‘Are you mom enough?’ The article is all about “attachment parenting."One of the parents profiled is Broomfield mom, Joanne Beauregard, who spoke with FOX31 about the article.“Attachment parenting, for me, means being with my children most or all of the time,” Beauregard said. That includes wearing your baby, co-sleeping and breastfeeding. "We parent what feels natural to us, it just so happens things that felt natural also was lined up with attachment parenting,” Beauregard said. The TIME article features stories and photos of moms breastfeeding older children, something long-considered taboo in American society.Child psychologist, Dr. Sheryl Ziegler, said the effects of extended breastfeeding have never been studied.“A 3-year-old breastfeeding on mom is about comfort,” Ziegler said. “There’s a different stage when you’re 3 and 4, and really what that child is practicing is their autonomy in the world, not so much their connection with a parent.”Ziegler said children could be affected in their ability to self-soothe, and moms can still nurture their children without the breast.“Provide them with touch, provide them with hugs, provide them with the warmth of being in mom`s arms,” she said.Beauregard, however, isn’t fazed.“My husband and I are firm believers that if you meet their needs early on, then they will grow up to be confident and secure adults,” she said. She hopes the article is a learning tool for other parents. What's your opinion about the issues raised?
