Video: Bulgaria politician escapes assassination attempt
There were several terrifying moments in Bulgaria over the weekend as an assassination attempt that may or may not have had malicious intent was caught on live TV.In the video, Oktai Enimehmedov, a 25-year-old ethnic Turk, runs on stage and puts a gas pistol to the head of Ahmed Dogan, the leader of Bulgaria’s Ethnic Turkish Party, at a national conference in Sofia.Witnesses say Enimehmedov pulled the trigger, but the gun misfired. Gas pistols are most often used for target practice, but not usually for anything else.Security guards were able to wrestle Enimehmedov to the ground after the attempted assassination, and police arrested him.Police said he was also carrying two knives. While the event certainly appeared to have malicious intent, police and others say Enimehmedov may not have actually been attempting to assassinate Dogan.According to the Guardian, Enimehmedov left a note at his home addressed to his mother, saying he had no intention of killing the party leader but simply wanted to show him he was not "untouchable."The Guardian is also reporting that Ethnic Turkish Party officials have also been forced to address claims the party may have staged the assassination attempt itself in order to boost its image.
