Soxteem Gets First NCAA Victory
UMBC defeated NCAA tournament top seed Virginia Friday to become the first No. 16 seed to ever win a game against a No. 1 seed. The Retrievers scored at will in the second half, scoring 53 points to break a halftime 21-21 tie and embarrass the Cavaliers. Virginia entered the tournament as both the ACC regular season and tournament champion and had a 31-2 record when they took the floor against UMBC. The Cavaliers played weak defense and only made 2 of 22 three points while the Retrievers made 12 of 24 three pointers. The Cavaliers came into the game a 20.5 point favorite and the 74-54 defeat was probably the biggest upset in collegiate basketball history.
