When we participate in any sport at a competitive level it involves a great deal of physical control and mental focus. The mental state of an athlete during training and competition is said to impact performance. There has been a long history of hypnosis in sport. Since the 1956 Melbourne Olympics the Russians have successfully used hypnotic techniques, to improve performance and produce many champions. Indeed we don't need to look too far in many sports to find sportsmen & women using these techniques. Sports hypnosis works directly with the subconscious mind, the part of the mind that controls our actions and behaviours. This allows changes to be made quickly, as long as the person is willing to make those changes. This is extremely important to sports people who need to achieve getting "in the zone" when they are competing. We can often find a number of reasons for failure when we attempt a sporting activity – doubts that lead to anxiety, bad weather and tiredness to name a few.
