We think of grains as cereal, oatmeal or granola. Porridge is a common dish in Northern Europe and Russia. It is mostly composed of barley, no surprise from the Brits or the Irish as the grain is used in beer production. Porridge has been associated with British prison food so it’s a slang for being “institutionalized”.
