Joseph earlier told his brothers that God sent him to Egypt to “save lives”. Although Joseph’s decision to require the people sell their livestock and land to buy food seems harsh, ultimately the people are grateful for Joseph’s reforms. They are so desperate to survive, they are willing to accept slavery in exchange for life.
