It's a 1950 and 60's Toy Boom in Raleigh
The North Carolina Museum of History will unveil its newest year-long exhibit to the public on October 4th- Toy Boom! Toys from the 1950s & ’60s. I was thrilled to get a sneak media peek this week. The 2nd floor exhibit features vintage toys like an Easy Bake Oven, the Rock ’Em, Sock ’Em Robots, a Slinky and so many more that had me feeling like I had gone back in time. This special toy exhibit in Raleigh examines how toys most beloved by Baby Boomers reflected the energy, ambition, and abundance of a prosperous era. They also channeled the uncertainties of the period-taking a look back made me realize how far we've actually come.“The baby-boomer years were a time of more in America… including more toys,” said Katie Edwards, the curator of popular culture at the North Carolina Museum of History. “We created this exhibit to help North Carolinians reflect on their paths from childhood to adulthood, including the toys that paved the way.”Toy Boom! is curated into different sections; TV westerns, space age, zany, and creative toys. Many of the sections include dolls and action figures. There are fun, hands-on interactive activities that the kids will love. Hot Wheels racing tracks, Pong, a larger-than-life Twister board, an interactive Lite-Brite wall, an Etch A Sketch station, a “Name that Tune” with TV Westerns game, and even a digital Christmas catalog station will engage them while the adults reminisce. Some toys from the 70's are displayed as well. Remember Merlin, the Electronic Wizard? What about Speak and Spell? Simon? I couldn't help but notice that many of the toys I had played with as a kid are, surprisingly, back and recognizable to my own kids.In fact, my favorite part of the exhibit was seeing how toys from that era have evolved to entertain the children of today. A trip to downtown Raleigh and NC Museum of History's Toy Boom! is definitely worth planning with the kids (and grandparents).Special events are planned throughout the year including a 21 and over evening of play so stay tuned to the NC Museum of History's website for upcoming celebrations. The Details:Toy Boom! will be open from October 4, 2019, through January 3, 2021.North Carolina Museum of History- 5 E.
