Lot 6: 2016 Grenache Mourvedre, Dry Creek Valley, 6-pack | Hunt & Heist | Fine California Wines
Lot 6 is a coup. The Sonoma winery rightly gets 90+ point scores from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast every year and this wine is stunningly delicious. They had 5 sumptuous barrels left over from their bottling and liked our story, so we were able to swoop in. It sells for around $45 per bottle, so working our usual magic (mostly begging, buying in bulk, being discreet, rebranding, listing it online only) we're happy to share it for $16! As usual, it's available in 6-bottle packs, one pack per person. Grenache is one of the most widely planted varieties in the world, yet only in a few small parts of the globe does it flourish into cult status. The most celebrated Grenaches are in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, “The Pope’s New Castle” where winemaking started with the Greeks arriving in the 4th century BC, long before the ’new’ 14th Century castle. Chateauneuf-du-Papes are Grenache-based with savoury Mourvedre and/or dark tannic Syrah helping create beautifully textured wines with concentrated red fruit flavors. Love for these wines’ qualities and history inspired one of the very best Sonoma wineries to bring them to California nearly 50 years ago. So Lot 6’s biodynamically-farmed vines originally came from the same arid, stone-laden region at the heart of the Rhone Valley. And this stunningly high-quality homage to Chateauneuf-du-Pape is made with Grenache (55%) and Mourvedre (45%), skillfully crafted by one of the finest Rhone devotees in California. Some brief tasting notes are below. Enjoy!!
