Pantone’s Colour of 2018: Ultra Violet
When they announced 18-3838 Ultra Violet as their pick for colour of the year, Pantone described it as communicating “originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking”. Pantone Colour Institute Vice President Laurie Pressman describes it as an “empowering” and “optimistic” colour. Bold and sensuous Ultra Violet follows in a long tradition of rich and vibrant picks by the colours experts, from 2017’s Greenery to 2014’s Radiant Orchid and Tangerine Tango in 2012. Evoking self-care, the home as a haven, and bringing the natural indoors - although perhaps in the form of amethyst geodes rather than succulents - this colour very much echoes the same philosophy of living that was embodied in Greenery. While Ultra Violet may not be the first colour that comes to mind when you imagine a relaxed and tranquil space, the complex blue-based purple has a mystical and spiritual quality. It complements spaces created with thoughtfulness, meditation and zen living in mind. As Pantone explain, the colour “is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world”.
