GFI Policy Department Internship: Environmental Policy Targets Primary GFI Mentor: Senior Environmental Scientist Isaac Emery Duration: 10 hours/week for 8+ weeks, start date flexible Location: Remote Overview: As the environmental policy intern, your primary goal is to identify and act on a wide range of environmental targets to create a more sustainable, healthy, and humane food supply. Through your work, you will help shape the role of the farmers and manufacturers in achieving environmental targets by supplying alternatives to factory-farmed products. National, state, and local governments have set a wide range of environmental sustainability goals to improve water and air quality, restore degraded lands, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Plant-based and clean meat may be able to help achieve these goals by substituting for more environmentally costly animal products and by supporting sustainable farming practices. The environmental policy intern will help GFI answer key questions about these goals, such as: Who sets government environmental goals, who is responsible for meeting them, and what are the guidelines for achieving them? How might these goals benefit or restrict clean and plant-based meat production? What opportunities are there to advance governments’ sustainability goals by promoting the production and purchasing of plant-based and clean meat? What opportunities or requirements are there to engage farmers or other members of the plant-based and clean meat supply chain to achieve government’s sustainability goals? What opportunities are there for NGOs and companies to get involved in setting and achieving these goals? Activities: Identify national and regional environmental targets for land management that could support a shift toward plant-based and clean meat production, including nutrient management plans for impaired waters, nutrient credit trading markets, carbon limits and trading markets, etc. Create a database of these environmental targets, including their scope, stakeholders, enforcement mechanisms, and openings for participation. Draft an internal memo or policy brief on the relevance of these environmental targets to GFI and members of the plant-based and clean meat supply chains. Learning Objectives: The intern will learn about clean and plant-based meat production, the agricultural systems that support them, and the roles that food producers can play in setting and achieving environmental targets.
