PLEASE stop asking people with Tourettes/Tics

"Omg, what if you ticced and you- (insert some destructive, annoying, or otherwise harmful action)?"

Tics can be incredibly suggestive and if I haven't though of it, now you've put it in my head and a potential tic to be anxious about.

Sometimes you just need to keep your thoughts to yourself.

Happy disability pride, but are you normal about people with visible disabilities and deformities/differences?

Do you think the actor with marfan syndrome who always plays the horror monster is scary? Do you judge your classmate with cerebral palsy who walks with a limp and always has? Do you still stare at the double amputee homeless vet you see downtown? Do you avoid eye contact with your friend’s kid who has Treacher-Collins? Do you ask a sexual partner if their hidradenitis flair is an STD? Do you ask for censorship when the scarred guy in your discord server posts photos? Do you compare the girl at the beach with pectus excavatum to “looking anorexic?” Do you ask if your fat disabled friend really is disabled or they instead just need to lose weight?

Congratulations, you might be ableist. Yes, you yourself might even be disabled as well, but if you think these ways, you are ableist.

i know it probably wont happen for another 50 years but i sure do wish the discussion of disability rights was more ‘popular’. i dunno if it’s people’s inherent fear of mortality or aging or what but ableism is so fucking out of control. people have conversations about bodily autonomy and accessibility when it comes to stuff like classism, feminism, trans rights, etc then look at you like youre fucking bonkers if you say something like everywhere should be wheelchair accessible by default. and no not some back/side entrance with freight elevators or some shit. it’s not a special request to allow someone to use the fuckin front door

“Disability” is the world’s largest minority, that anyone can suddenly become a member of, at any time.

It has nothing to do with morality or motivation or inspiration or choices or manifesting or any of that other bullshit.

It’s genetics, socio-economics, coincidence, and a whole lot of fucking dumb luck.

And a LOT of abled people do not want to think about that last part.

They do not want to think about how close they truly are to being disabled, to losing independence, to losing financial freedoms, the ability to feed themselves, eat what they want, go where they want, live how they want.

They want to believe that if they do everything “right” (according to their definition of “right”) that whatever their system of Universal Accounting is will tally the balance and reward them with continued able-bodied-ness and good health.

Unfortunately, shit just doesn’t work like that.

Most often, it’s a very deep fear and a refusal to acknowledge the possibility that being disabled is not a moral failing. That it’s possible to do everything society says you’re supposed to, and shit can still go wrong, and your mind and body can still break down around you anyway.

And no lie, that’s scary. It’s genuinely terrifying to think about.

But if that’s terrifying to just think about it happening to you, imagine how much worse it is to actually live it… and then to ask for help, and have people tell you that, not only is what’s happening to you your own fault, but you also don’t deserve human rights because of it. That as hard as it is to navigate eating and drinking and walking and moving and listening and everything else now, it’s a “hassle” for them to “make accommodations” to even let you in the door.

If it’s not accessible, it’s not acceptable.

Period.

Good for this person. This is exactly what you do. Screw the job.

I had a job that made me work an all nighter, 30 hours straight, over Thanksgiving. I resigned that Monday and it was one of the most satisfying decisions I’ve ever made.

Please pay attention to all the manipulation tactics this boss uses, because they’re pulling out every trick in the book.

  • “I’m not your boss, I’m your friend”
  • “Other people will be hurt by this and it’s your fault and I’m going to tell them all that”
  • Mocking language
  • Jobs are important too
  • “Be a team player”
  • “We’re your family too”
  • Talking as if this is a thing you must do
  • “We all make sacrifices”
  • Undermining your authority
  • “You caused all of this, really”
  • Accusing you of being “unprofessional”
  • “Look at the money you cost us”
  • “Just laugh it off and come back to work”

This is like a 101 course in how employers use guilt trips to coerce you into putting up with their bullshit. This is precisely why you should never trust those employers who insist that they’re “like a family.” They are not. It’s just a ruse so that your boss can neg you into putting your job ahead of your actual life.

also before it starts to happen: if i see a single person calling july "gay wrath month" or saying "we deserve a second one" it is ON SIGHT. that is DISABILITY PRIDE MONTH. abled queers i will run you over with my wheelchair if you so much as reblog one of those comments.

hello! reblog this version instead!

actually my body does not inherently need a trigger warning and self harm scars do not make me disgusting or ugly or traumatizing to look at. my thighs are scarred and I like shorts and y’all are just gonna have to look the other way

listen to disabled people 💖
Digital illustration of a large group of disabled people of different ethnicities, ages, and genders. Among the crowd are service and emotional support animals. There’s two smaller protest signs that read, ‘I shouldn’t lose benefits when I get married.’ And ‘ban subminimum wage’ the main sign reads, ‘disabled people are expert of their own lives and know what they need.’

I'm taking the word "intersectionality" away from internet discourse and putting it on the shelf until people learn that the meaning is "the sum of your identity can not be split into pieces and sorted neatly into easy-to-understand boxes because each piece influences the rest" and not "these people are The Most Oppressed"

skinny disabled people you have a duty to not be fatphobic to disabled fat people or just fatphobic period. do you have any fucking idea how horrible it is to be disabled trying to get a diagnosis and having everything blamed on your weight. do you know how anger inducing it is to have every single (and yes i mean EVERY SINGLE) symptom blamed on weight. the worst part of it is trying to receive community support and seeing so many chronically ill/disabled people push fatphobic rhetoric and be openly hostile to fat disabled people. you arent cripplepunk if youre fatphobic.

jk rowling's new reputation will never not be funny to me. when you see her name now you dont think "oh yeah thats the chick who wrote harry potter" you think "oh lord, this TERF bitch again" like bro how do you fuck up so bad that your fuck ups overshadow writing the third most read piece of literature in existence
