Who's On Audio

Reviews of the Doctor Who audio plays and sundry other things I'm interested in.

Tegan's departure hits you like a ton of bricks. When most companions leave, it's all "I've fallen in love and I want to stay with him" or "I have to stay. These people need me."

Tegan was the one companion who finally reached her limit on how many people she could watch be killed while traveling with the Doctor. It's one thing you never expect to see, even though it's one of the most realistic reactions a companion could have.

I have no problem with the possibility of there one day being a female Doctor, but I think it's worth noting that we don't really have any confirmation that Time Lords can switch sexes upon regeneration. The Doctor said the Corsair was a woman once, but that doesn't necessarily mean she regenerated into a cis-woman.

if doctors 1-8 were off on their light at the end adventure and war doctor, 10, and 11 were doing the whole day of the doctor thing I’m just going to assume shalka doctor and 9 grabbed a milkshake together and spent the whole day avoiding all this weird shit

At the tender age of 100-something, the first Romana came off like the Time Lord equivalent of a 19 year old who took herself too seriously and thought she had the world all figured out. She spent all of her time with the Doctor rolling her eyes and wondering if this bizarrely dressed man-child knew what he was doing.

Then she regenerated, and her second incarnation retained that Miss Knowitall personality while developing the ability to have fun and appreciate the Doctor's jokes.

I think Romana's ability to see herself as the Doctor's intellectual better while having to face how inexperienced she was and learn to loosen up a little is what makes her my favorite companion.

With those 4+ episode Doctor Who serials, very rarely do you run across the coveted story that naturally flows for several hours. Instead, you sometimes run across...

  • At least half an hour of padding ("Oh no, the Doctor/companion has been kidnapped a second time!")
  • So many plot points that it takes most of the serial just to set them up ("We're on part 6 of 6. Maybe we should actually do something other than investigate")
  • The plot changing almost entirely by the second hour ("Wait, we're on another planet. Weren't we on Earth trying to stop something else earlier?")

If you're wondering why I haven't posted a new audio review in months, I have a very good excuse:

I'm superbly lazy.

It's all birds of a feather when it comes to the Doctor Who audio fans. Gallifrey Base's forums are full of people who hated this month's release, "Moonflesh." Meanwhile, everyone at Big Finish's official forums loved it. And there's hardly a dissenting voice in each respective forum.

I liked it, by the way. It didn't blow me away or anything, but it was pretty fun.

I'm watching "Planet of the Daleks" and struggling to wrap my head around the "molten ice" on the planet. Do you mean water? I think that's what ice becomes when you melt it.

Anonymous asked:

Why do you like Jo? she's a dumb blonde stereotype, and is basically just as bad as rose.

  • 'dumb blonde' was literally the opposite of what they were trying to get across
  • a lot of her character and story comes from her showing she’s much more than a ‘dumb blonde stereotype’ which is what the doctor basically regarded her as when they first met
  • seriously so much of her plot is just devoted to showing just what a caring, selfless person she is
  • to the point where she’s ready to give up her life without a second thought for the safety of others
  • despite this, she /considers/ herself a ‘dumb blonde’ and there are occasional hints that she’s very conscious of what other people think of her
  • she’s a major influence on three’s character and they make a point to show how she’s helped him develop into a friendlier and more hopeful character
  • she’s funny
  • she’s brave
  • she’s optimistic in a very endearing way
  • the episodes she’s in tend to be very fun and some of the most creative, in my opinion (the green death, carnival of monsters, terror of the autons, and the daemons, just to name a few)
  • she’s a great foil to about every other character on the show
  • going on that, her relations to the other characters (especially the doctor) add a lot to the episodes she’s in
  • katy manning is a wonderful actor and she just shines in her portrayal of Jo
  • I think she has one of the most well-acted, lovingly written, and just all around perfect departures the show has ever had
  • her companion chronicles are some of the best and katy does the voices perfectly
  • (rose isn’t a ‘dumb blonde stereotype’ either)
  • She’s fab as hell
  • don’t ever insult jo grant
  • what show are you even watching

Jesus Christ. Did he lose a fight with a 1973 Freeman’s catalogue?

There's this one thing about Big Finish and the way they treat their companions that just doesn't sit right with me. They don't like to give their companions exits.

Warning: I'm about to spoil several years worth of Big Finish audios, right up to December 2013's "Afterlife"
