I’m thinking so hard about Spiderleg and Squirrelflight as aloof childhood friends.
Like the love each other the way only childhood friends can but they also disapprove of each others choices constantly to the point where they can’t have a conversation deeper than about the weather.
Squirrelflight wishes that Spiderleg was a better father and mate, while Spiderleg wishes Squirrelflight would leave Bramblestar for her own good and doesn’t understand why she puts up with him.
But they would never say any of that to each other’s faces, so they talk about nothing as their friendship disintegrates into nothing.

The black water dragged Darksong deeper and deeper into the abyss. Thoughts of his loved ones filled his mind. The way Alderheart laughed, the way Needletail ruffled his fur, the way Hawkwing told stories, the way Sparkfire would touch his nose. The memories made the ache in his chest easier to bear as he closed his eyes.
He was loved.
