One thing about the whole “I need to shock audiences and surprise them” mentality going on in media currently is that, not only does it sacrifice character arcs or having the narrative make sense for the sake of “surprising audiences”, I feel it also punishes the audience for trying to engage with the material.
Good world-building and foreshadowing should reward people for noticing small details such as names or places or even guessing what a character will do.
Since it is a general rule in Tumblr to use ATLA as an example of good writing, I want to point out to Azula’s first appearence in the show.
We first see her in a flashback only for a moment where she does not say anything and her identity is not even hinted at. But to those who pay attention, you can gather that her design is too unique to be just a background character, she must have some importance down the line.
You can also see that her reaction to Zuko being punished is similar to Zhao’s and the opposite to Iroh’s. This manages to establish plenty about her.
And then the season finale reveals she is Zuko’s sister.
One of my favorite things about people’s blind reaction to ATLA is when they notice Azula’s flashback cameo and say “hey, she seems happy Zuko is being scarred for life. Wonder if she is important in some way” then discover who she is and go “the girl enjoying Zuko’s suffering was his sister!!?”
And that is good payoff. Because it is something that actually rewards people for engaging with the material. It gives them positive feedback that tells them there is value in engaging with the material beyond just consumption. That there is value in rewatching and see what one missed.
The need to “shock” audiences is the opposite of this. To have a character or story seem important only to drop it unceremioniously because “it was unexpected” is the opposite of that.
It tells them “you tried to guess what was going to happen? to think rewatching would help you understand the work better? you are stupid for doing so.”

What a lot of people don’t seem to understand is that when you have a child, as well as being your child they are also a small human being. A small human being who has their own thoughts. Who has their own feelings. Who is three times as delicate as you.
So when you’re disciplining your child take into account that whatever you do will stay with them forever. Take into account that even when disciplining them you still need to think about their feelings. Take into account that THEY WILL CRY. No one likes being told off! Especially if you’re small and being screamed at.
Oh and if/when they do cry, DO NOT scream at them to stop crying. DO NOT tell them that they’re stupid. DO NOT tell them that there tears are worth nothing. Because that’s condoning the idea that their very feelings are worthless.
And Jesus Christ, please be careful because there is a difference between disciplining your child and being abusive. -If your child is crying so much that they can’t breathe; you need to stop. -If your child is genuinely scared of you; please stop. -If your child feels in any way that they are not safe around YOU! THEIR PARENT; please stop. -if your child is getting depressed by how you treat them; … you guessed it! stop!
Your child is a real person. With real feelings. They are not your play toy. They are not rubber balls they don’t just bounce back. Everything you do to your child will affect them in their future.
So my god, please don’t ruin them. They are the future.

Catherine Halsey presents one of the most prominent moral dilemmas in Halo. She’s a willing participant in the kidnapping, concealment, and ‘conscription’ of 75 six-year-olds – and then spearheads their augmentation. And then nearly half the class fails to recover.
But we’re also told, through conversations with Deja and others, that if someone less qualified than Halsey had led the effort, then the end result would have had an even higher mortality and/or washout rate. That begs the question: was it better, righter, to stay with the program, to complete the task as well as was possible (no matter its morality), or would it have been better to walk away and wash her hands of it? The latter would have been easier, certainly. But then would she have borne responsibility for any additional deaths, deaths that occurred because her replacement missed something she wouldn’t have?
Either way, she ends the day with blood on her hands. Maybe the question was just how much.
I think the discussion around Halsey tends to accept on face value that the problem is just “super soldiers or civil war”. If it’s framed that way, then civil war is a problem with no history or moral delimmas of its own. It’s accepted as inevitable, that the only thing we can do is react to it, and that the immoral behaviour begins with her creating super soldiers, not anytime before that.
But I think like, especially after reading her journal, the problem needs to be reframed as: well WHY are we about to have interstellar civil war? Who are the actors involved in making this happen? Why did we allow tensions to rise to the point where the only “solution” is mass kidnapping and indoctrination to react to this problem? Was that the result of gross incompetency of the state, or is this a deliberate form of inaction used to excuse greater military force on the outer colonies?
Like what she did is incredibly fucked up on a scale I don’t think most people can easily comprehend, but her actions are borne of a chain of brutal imperialistic behaviour from the UEG/UNSC. She is a symptom of that disease, not the root of it. Her actions can’t be fully unpacked without looking at the issue she was trying to solve with the same intense moral scrutiny first.
And as clumsy as the discussion around her actions were in Kilo-5, Parangosky’s condemnation of her might actually just be a deliberate attempt to cover that up. If the UNSC can use Halsey as a scapegoat, then they don’t have to answer for their own crimes that pidgeonholed her into that decision in the first place.

Soviet Underwater Firearms of the Cold War
World War II saw the rise of combat divers and underwater demolition commandos, a new aspect of warfare which would evolve and increase throughout the Cold War. In the 1960′s the Soviet Union began to deploy special frogmen or divers whose duty was guard naval assets and protect them for enemy divers or commandos. Firearms are ineffective underwater since bullets don’t travel well through water. The following video demonstrates this problem…
Typically, early Soviet frogmen were armed only with a knife and if they were lucky, a speargun. In the late 1960′s the Russian engineer Vladimir Simonov sought to rectify this situation by designing a specialty firearm which could be effectively used underwater. What he created was the SPP-1 underwater pistol, which was adopted in 1971. The most unique aspect of the SPP-1 was it’s cartridge, which fired a 115mm long, caliber 4.5mm dart (4.5x40mmR) which was designed to be hydro-dynamically stable and thus able to travel through water.
The pistol is a breechloading firearm with four barrels, with each barrel firing one at a time giving it four shots. Ammunition was kept in special clips to facilitate reloading. The barrels were not rifled as the projectile is kept in line by hydrodynamic effects. As a result the pistol has much less accuracy and range when fired outside of water.
While the SPP-1 was a revolutionary design and was certainly useful, it had limited firepower, range, and penetrating power. Thus Simonov designed APS underwater rifle, which was adopted in 1975. The APS used the same kind of cartridge, firing a 120mm long, caliber 5.66mm dart (5.66x39mm). Using a gas piston system similar to that of the kalashnikov, the rifle was semi automatic and was fed using 26 round detachable magazines. Unlike the kalashnikov it fired from an open bolt, as apparently have the action and barrel filled with water increase stability of the projectile when fire. Again, like the SPP-1 pistol it’s barrel was not rifled, giving it limited range out of water.
The SPP-1 and APS was used by Soviet Special Forces and Naval Forces throughout the 1970′s and 1980′s. The designs were retired in the 1990′s with the development of newer designs such as the ADS and the ASM-DT.
1. Have a goal
While it may sound like I’m stating the obvious here, your character needs to have something they want to accomplish. Maybe they want to be the best at something, see a place, fall in love, conquer the world, or something else. Whatever it is, they need to have something that they desire beyond all other things. Ideally, give them more than one goal. Make them have to sacrifice one to achieve the other, to add extra drama
2. Have a reputation
Maybe they’re the best artist in their class or they’re great at juggling. Perhaps they slipped on the stairs in front of their whole village. Either way, give something for the locals to remember about them. That way it can give you a starting point for the interactions with other characters
3. Have a friend
Whether a friend, a coworker, a sibling, an army buddy, or someone they saved, have someone close to your character whom they’re close to and wish well. Yeah, angsty “I have no friends” characters can be fun, but in small doses; eventually the reader gets fed up with them. At the very least the character needs someone to talk to or bounce ideas off of
4. Have a home
It may be a neighborhood they grew up in, their parents’ house, or a room they’ve been renting in a tavern. Hell, it could even be a person if you so choose. Everyone needs to feel secure at one time or another
5. Have a signature item
Now, recognize that this may not work for EVERY character, but it’s up to you to decide what will fit and what won’t. In many cases, it can work. A signature item is something that is recognizably YOUR CHARACTER’S, be it a weapon, a scarf, a toy, or a piece of jewelry. It’s something that makes them feel like themself
6. Have a problem
This should be something other than the problem addressed in the main plot line. Maybe a member of their family is sick, they are broke, or they’re failing their classes. This helps make your character seem more realistic because NO ONE has one problem at a time
7. Have a secret
This can affect the plot or not; either way, it helps make your character more well rounded. Maybe your character can’t read, left their crewmates to die when a kracken attacked their ship, or made their long lost sister run away. If you choose to have it affect the plot in any way, this secret should embarrass your character, make it so that other characters don’t trust your character, or somehow endanger them and the people they’re close to if found out
8. Have a reason to be brave and to fight
Maybe it’s because your character wants to be like their hero, maybe it’s so they can repay a debt (like if someone saved their life previously), maybe it’s for their child, but your character needs to have a reason to occasionally face their fears

I understand that this is meant to be simple, but GOSH DANG, is it so helpful! This came at the perfect time for me, as I am in the process of creating characters both in the realm of fictional writing and tabletop roleplaying. I’ve been seriously struggling with one of my characters for a long time now and always felt something was missing. Only now do I realize - I had all of these, except for a secret! Well, I gave him a secret to keep, but not one that would make him fearful, embarrassed, or ashamed! And what point is there in a secret without a price attached to it’s exposure? There was no cost, no blow to his own worth or self-esteem or ego, to keeping that secret from his friends and allies. Now I know I need to sit down with my DM and work out where to interweave a potential secret into the plot.
