I'm Heather- gender fluid; they/them. i promote better care for ball pythons by dismissing myths and encouraging science based learning. blog intro: https://wheremyscalesslither.tumblr.com/post/648474883192455168/hi-im-heather-and-i-run-the-blog adhd/bipolar/generalized anxiety. this blog is not solely snakes. i make tons of spelling and grammar errors but i cant be bothered. also my snakes are damn cute. everything is copyrighted to myself unless otherwise attributed.

My Ball Python Resources

Here is a current list of write-ups a ball python owner might find useful.

Please understand that none of these write-ups are to be taken as scientific fact. The majority of the ball python hobby is based on experience and hearsay, and these write-ups reflect that. The purpose of these are to provide some entertainment value and be somewhat educational- but NOT academic. I strongly advise doing your own additional research.

Enjoy :)

Oh no I actually really like that name

are you not allowed to have pet snakes in Hawaii?

Avatar

Nope! They’re illegal here because they could easily become invasive and cause further harm to the endemic species.

I’ve decided I’m going to use my side account again for posting art and sharing octopus updates and stuff.

If you’re interested, I’ll be over at @wheremyfeetfall

I think it’s unlikely I’ll have snakes again in the near future as I am entirely comfortable and at home here in Hawaii, and neither my partner nor I have plans to move.

So I think other than sharing a few posts from that blog, this one will stay pretty quiet.

Miss y’all <3

Working with an animal that only has a lifespan of about 12 months can be difficult.

I made my first gyotaku pieces with my friend Panini aka Neeners.

She had completed her life cycle, so I wanted to do something to memorialize her. After incubating her eggs for 3-4 weeks, the female Day Octopus will pass away after her offspring hatch. There is nothing you can do to avoid it- it’s a natural process for this species. It never gets easier though.

She was a good girl.

My work has been under attack by ARA and several false articles have been published about how we are cruel for farming octopuses for food

Except we aren’t farming octopuses for food

We currently have libel suits going with those news outlets. I’m not allowed to say much.

But I’m spent. I’m tired of fighting these ARAs. I’m so stressed I vomited on the way to work. We are closed for repairs until summer, and because our lawyers want us to get additional permitting to cover our asses. Just in case.

This is the best job I’ve ever had and I am just not thriving right now with all this nonsense.

I miss you all!!! If anyone wants to keep up with me, feel free to add me on Facebook! Just shoot me a PM with your username on here or leave a comment here that you added me so I know who is who!!!

I also am very active on Instagram with several accounts- one for art, one for tie dye, and one for personal journaling stuff.

It’s official!!! As of today I’ve been at the octopus farm for a year. I’ve learned a lot, became a lead technician on the farm, and am up for a big raise in December!

I love this job.

Reptile adjacent!

I’ve never done dragon art before, so this will be my first sculpted dragon. I recently got back into resin, so i made the ice crystals and molded them in silicone so I can cast them in resin for a more authentic look. I’m really excited about this because the dragon has already surpassed my expectations!!!

The ice crystals look AMAZING

I started beefing the dragon up and sculpting the wings!

Ball Pythons are not pet rocks!

People often like to say all ball pythons do is sit around in holes and do nothing else, and the only time they begin to move is when their husbandry is incorrect or they aren’t being fed correctly. This is just not true. Appropriate enrichment encourages natural behaviors including movement.

Temperatures from each enclosure vary slightly but range between 88-92 degree hotspots, 78 degree cool ambient, and 84-86 degree warm ambient. Humidity is regularly between 60-65%.

No one “surfs” looking for meals, and no one misses meals unless in shed.

And yet… here they are- out and about.
