I know you didn't ask for questions but I was wondering, how do you know when you've written something good enough for your podcast/where do you go to get inspiration?

i rely a lot on other people to help me determine whether or not something is publish/performance-ready. for night vale and within the wires, i have co-writers to help with writing/editing. having another person to look over your work not only helps quality, but it also helps confidence in what you’re doing. for playwriting, you really have to be collaborative. theater is not a solo endeavor. so there are lots of opportunities to run things by others, to hear words in actors’ mouths, to see how it works physically.

but the final decision on determining if something is good enough to run with really is a gut thing. if you read a lot, watch a lot, take in a lot of other art, you will get a sense of what is good, and what you like. it takes a lot of time to reach that level of self-awareness, and the feelings are never 100% (at least not for me). but if you set deadlines and make promises, you can at least ensure that you will put something out there, however imperfect (and believe me - all art is imperfect).

as far as inspirations, it varies. my tastes lean toward beautiful and complex language, so poetry has always been a big inspiration. theater as well. seeing live theater & dance helps me understand how humans interact in realistic-yet-fictional ways.

A thought

Maybe it’s not about what you take away from the @welcometonightvalebook when you read it. Maybe it’s about what the book takes away from you.

Time, the sense that your life has a greater purpose, and three and a half of your favourite childhood memories.

HEY I gave you half of that childhood memory back like, five minutes later. Though I guess if I took time away...okay I understand the confusion.

Above all things, scientists are protectors of our world. ‘Scientist is another word for hero,’ Mayor Cardinal was fond of saying. They use science to not only learn things but also to change those things so that everything is better going forward. Just like the scientist who cured polio, or that couple who invented radiation, or the astrologers who write our futures for us. A good scientist would never compromise societal good for one person’s needs.

extremely relevant quote from Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel (via thegraftedbranch)

Scientists are neat.

//So I’m finally reading Mostly Void Partially Stars despite having it since the books basically came out… and wow, I can’t read this like a normal book (Ignoring the fact it hissed at me a few times).

Cecil’s voice is overtaking my normal reading one.

I think Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor are using mind control on us guys. Stay aware and stay safe.

What even is a normal book though.
