Cultural Appropriation (Simplified)

Okay, so let’s say you have two groups of people. One group has purple shirts, and the other has green shirts. The purple shirts are pretty important to the people wearing them, and they wear them so they can be unique, show off their people’s culture, and not have to conform to the green shirt’s beauty standards. The people in the green shirts are standing around, when the people in the purple shirts walk past. The people in the green shirts see the people in the purple shirts and start to get angry, because they feel that everybody should wear green shirts, and even though the purple shirts are important to those people, they still think they shouldn’t be able to wear them. So, the people in the green shirts start to tease and attack the people in the purple shirts. They rip their purple shirts off and then give them green shirts, telling them  that if they want to fit in, they have to wear them. Even though these people do what they say and wear the green shirts, they still get harassed but they manage to deal with it.

So one day, the people in the green shirts get bored of their shirts and decide that those purple shirts those people used to wear are looking pretty nice. They then decide to make cheap knock off purple shirts of their own and start showing them off, passing them off as this new and cute style they’ve made up. The people who were forced to wear green shirts see this and get angry.

“Why are you wearing purple shirts?” they ask. “Those purple shirts are ours. We made them. They’re important to us. You practically ripped them off our backs and made fun of us for wearing them, so why do you get to make new ones and wear them for fashion and it’s completely okay? That’s cultural appropriation!”

“Oh my gosh, you people complain over everything!” scream the people wearing the knock off purple shirts. “People should be able to wear whatever they want! It’s called cultural sharing, not cultural appropriation! It’s just a shirt, nobody owns it. Also, how come we can’t wear purple shirts but you can wear green shirts?”

“Because you forced us to wear them! We can’t wear our purple shirts without your people making fun of us!  You don’t even care about the green shirts!”

“Ugh, complain, complain, complain! Even though those green shirts mean absolutely nothing to us, we’re going to use that as an argument to justify stealing your shirts! And if you say anything about it, you’ll be seen as angry and bitter by the media, so good luck trying to argue! Hashtag, green shirt people do purple shirts better!”

And that, my dears, is cultural appropriation.
