On this day, 15 June 1990, the Battle of Century City took place, as police in Los Angeles attacked striking janitors and their supporters during a peaceful Service Employees International Union demonstration. Janitors in the Century City office complex, most of whom were employed by cleaning contractor ISS, had gone out on strike on May 29 demanding improvements to pay and conditions. On the June 15 protest, LAPD officers brutally attacked the workers and their supporters, leaving several people seriously injured, including one pregnant woman who miscarried as a result. Rather than deter the workers, the violence caused mass outrage. And ISS subsequently agreed to recognise the workers’ union, provide for family health coverage and pay a living wage. The event also began to be commemorated with the creation of an annual June 15 Justice for Janitors Day. * If you value our work researching and promoting people’s history like this, please consider supporting us on patreon, where you can also get exclusive content and benefits: https://patreon.com/workingclasshistory https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=644834894356396&set=a.602588028581083&type=3

I forgot I was on camera in class and was kissing my cat and someone else DMed me and was like "I do that too with my cat" lmao oops

watching the new atrocity guide 👀

oh this is so interesting. I've never heard of a cult that equated computer programming with meditation and enlightenment. this is soooooo late 80s/early 90s lol

the sad thing about a lot of cults is that, at least at first, they actually do make the peoples' lives better. like they'll start doing better at work or school or get healthier. it's sad

why is tiktok music so bad. that victorias secret song is sooooo bad

tom sandoval looks like bella's dad from the twilight movies and not in a good way

today I found out that some parents of children who have prosthetic limbs or hearing aids or some other type of disability aid will take them away from their kids as punishment for misbehaving. which is one of the most insanely cruel things I've ever heard

this is the kind of gift you get for someone when you genuinely don't give a shit about them and know nothing about who they are aside from the fact that they have a spouse

insane that the people who were mad about hillary's emails a few years ago insisting she was a traitor who should be burned at the stake are now saying things like "even if trump is in jail I'll still vote for him"

I think shaun has a great video on how conservatives and the far-right view the law and how hypocritical they are. it's basically just "the law should only apply to people I disagree with"

my psychiatrist every time we meet: please stop smoking weed please god

me: no :)

her: okay :(

it's interesting/sad how often the people who are like "kids are innocent and their innocence needs to be protected so we shouldn't talk to them at all about anything bad or sexual" will be confronted with the fact that lots of kids have their innocence taken away as a result of our failure to educate them on healthy sex/sexuality and then say some shit like "well that's sad for those kids but what about MY kids I want MY kids to remain sheltered for as long as possible" like clearly your concern here is not protecting children in general

it's really kind of wild if you know trans people personally and you know how medically advanced trans healthcare actually is, because you see right wingers all the time presenting it like a doctor is just gonna go in there and hack your dick off and that's the end of it. like actually there are entire textbooks written about this shit. doctors train specifically to do genital reassignment surgeries. it's actually kind of amazing how far medical science has come. but talk to a conservative and they'll have you believe this is an incredibly risky, brutal, and violent procedure.

just had someone try to argue to me that letting trans people get gender affirming surgery will open the door to letting trans abled people cut off their limbs or whatever. which is such a mind numbingly stupid argument.

doctors take an oath to do no harm. they would have a great many ethical qualms about removing someone's healthy limb or eye or whatever, because that would be turning a perfectly abled person into a disabled person, something that would probably cause them harm in various ways for the rest of their life. it makes sense that a doctor would ethically not want to do this.

gender affirming surgery, on the other hand, is proven to be completely safe, does not remove any function, and actually improves the quality of their life in the long run.

if you can't see the difference you're either stupid or willfully ignorant
