Seems to be most closely related to Luwian, but specialists can't read it yet. It survived because the Hittites wanted to record religious rites in the original language. Thank you, Hittites.

Thank you, Hittites.

Very glad to see the Hittites getting the respect and admiration they have deserved for 3650 years. If anyone has any further questions about the Hittites please know that you can always come to me, I have a literal PhD in Hittite. That is not a joke! That is a real thing that I have!

@frostfire-17 I would love to hear some interesting things about the Hittites if you feel inclined. :)

Interesting things about the Hittites! Here are four.

  1. They were Aggressively Ecumenical. When they conquered, which they did a lot, they schlorped up everyone else's gods and added them to their own pantheon (hence the multilingual ritual texts). They called themselves the People of A Thousand Gods. They were not exaggerating.
  2. Their first king, Hattusili I, has an official royal edict where he whines forever about how his family was super ungrateful and didn't support him. His son? Gave him a vassal state, rebelled. His daughter? Left her home at the capital, she incited rebellion there. His nephew? Conspired with his mom, Hattusili's sister, against him. We don't know the sister's name because he just calls her "the snake."
  3. There's a Hittite letter to the Mycenaean Greeks which indicates that they could maybe stand to cool their tits about Troy.
  4. The first attested treaty between equal international powers was between the Hittites and Ramses II of Egypt, ~1270 BC-ish. The Hittites had been developing the treaty for several generations prior to this, from border agreements to vassal treaties, and ended up with a six-part template including a historical preamble and lists of witnesses. There's a copy of it on the wall of the UN in New York.

This makes me cry, actually.

Just to add on. Libraries in many cities have 3d printers you can use that charge you only the price of materials. So if you can't wait for the shipping from the engineers, try your local library.

Mamma Mia but it’s about an assassin who can’t remember which billionaire CEO they was sent to kill at a business conference and they can’t tell the difference between them because all the CEOs look like bog standard James Bond villains.

Banger, a hit post.

You understand theming and storytelling well. I enjoy your brain.

THE ABBA SONGS ARE CRUCIAL AND NEEDED!

YOU! YOU UNDERSTAND! YES!!!!!

I just think that 'animals are living intelligent creatures that have feelings and deserve to be respected' and 'when done properly farming is beneficial to both people and animals and there's nothing wrong with raising and killing animals for food, clothing, and other products' are concepts that very much can and should coexist

No idea what my undergraduate French class book writers were thinking adding shock value for spice in a grammar/vocab learning book but honestly I remember it to this day so good on them

Also shoutout to the teacher who had us read the epilogue in silence and meet our gaze as we looked up one by one in shock after reading how the guy we met in the unit talking about how to talk about relatives and who described his entire family to us and invited us to dinner was killed by the mob and his body found in the Seine like

Wait different anon here but could you give some examples of the caricatured Americana? I’m American so I think I’m just blind to it 😂

I wouldn't call it all-encompassing, but Season 1 in particular, where it's a road trip with guns, coffee and evangelism through a landscape of diners, motels, and looming national brands, has a lot of American-odyssey-as-imagined-by-a-confused-foreigner trappings and artifacts thrown in there.

(To the extent that a few listeners definitely got confused themselves early on and thought the show was taking place in the US, or even a distant future version of the US.)

It’s insane to see that this is Twitter users’ reactions to this when this is just completely normal on Tumblr. Twitter is such a hellscape of privacy violations that standard anonymity features like hidden likes are treated as suspicious.

i see where you're coming from OP but it looks like this would only be available to people who pay for twitter so it's a pretty reasonable assumption

i don't understand the recent "how often do men think of the roman empire" trend. one of the most well-known recent academic and popular historians of the roman empire is a woman, mary beard. why do this? it isn't cute or funny if you think about the implications for more than five seconds

"it's so crazy how men think about the roman empire, or the civil war, or history so often! i don't do that because i'm a woman. i think about poetry and literature instead, which men don't do" please stop this new girl dinner but for intellectual pursuits

yeah pop history is really strongly gender-branded because it's a commercial product like any other. They gotta sell ads on the history channel so they also gotta maintain the premise that the history they're selling is Boy History or Girl History to pitch specific demos to advertisers, and in the process that such a distinction is anything but a farce.

if you look at a professional historian's bookshelf and look up the authors on books written after about 1950, it'd be a very unusual specialty (or possibly a weird choice on the historian's part) where the gender divide is more extreme than 60-40, and which way it goes is completely arbitrary

I remember someone saying "mad scientists in fiction aren't scientists because there's never a control group"

I think if you've created an elixir that turns people into goat men you have sort have gone past the need for a control group. The control group is not going to placebo themselves into goat men. You can probably not run the control group, and safely assume that none of them would have turned into goat men. That said, having a control group for that would make the mad scientist seem extra crazy and be really really funny, especially if he was carefully testing them for goat like features from the dyed water they drank instead of the elixir
