We're new in this neighborhood and there are tons of kids, so we have to cement our reputation as a Good Trick or Treating House™

The small bowl is for kids with peanut allergies, and I also have cans of soda for kids with other/really severe peanut allergies!

Also at this house:

  • Nonverbal kids will not be forced to say "trick or treat"
  • No one is too old for candy
  • You don't even have to be wearing a costume to get candy
  • If you ARE wearing a costume, you will be complimented

Happy to report that I have already impressed one mom of a kid who has a bajillion allergies by having candy he could eat. But I also have non caffeinated soda for kids who can't have any of the candy.

I wish we had someone like you in my neighborhood when I was a kid ;-;

The great thing about becoming an adult is that you can BE that person now!

I have also learned the sign language for happy Halloween in case any deaf/hard of hearing kids come by!!!

Also, there is no difference between kids who

  • Walk from house to house
  • Are driven from house to house (walking can be hard with a disability)
  • Kids who are not from this neighborhood

Everyone gets candy

loved the age where you could look up paranormal stuff and have no gauge of what’s real/fake so you’re just like “oh my god …. a ghost caught on tape and no one is talking about this”

ten year old me after seeing the grainiest picture imaginable of a figure in a cemetery:

the catholic old white guy asked me to explain lgbtq+ to him and it was honestly kind of funny

“okay! you have 15 seconds to explain non-binary to me if there are only male and female genders”

me: if you lost your genitals would you still feel like a man?

“no”

would you feel like a woman?

“no?”

so you wouldn’t feel male or female

“yeah what’s your point?”

So, you wouldn’t fit into the gender binary of male or female? :)

him:

“so non-binary just means not feeling male or female?”

Yeah basically

“so why do they use “they” so much”?

if you were a woman would you want to be called a man?

“no…”

And the opposite?

“no…”

Why why would you want someone to call you male or female if you’re not male or female then?”

it’s not a perfect way of thinking but i had 15 seconds and i think it got the point across

As queer cinema expands and flourishes into more genres, there is so much potential to show the various ways queer people, particularly queer people of color, find and sustain love in community, in relationships, in friendships. Maybe the answer here isn’t to look to the narratives that excluded us. (Or if we do turn to these narratives, why not truly refashion them, in more than just our image?)
