Amateurs

For every amateur cartographer 

There is an amateur map,

The only accurate detail

The degree to which they're lost.

For every amateur mountaineer

The only thing to scale

Is the sweat on the brow

As automatic legs climb

Not knowing when to cease.

For every amateur lover

There is an affection still innocent,

The pure blood of admiration

No skill and its frustrations. 

Every amateur disciple 

Has faith like a child,

Belief in anchors not seen

For the shore that does not drift away.

The map sees the land

But does not measure steps

The peaks count the sunsets

Yet shares not even one,

Lovers love wordlessly

And grasp a jealous hand.

Yet the faithful share their all

For a hope of more to come.

All the rivers and valleys,

Deltas estuaries

Sanctuaries for canaries

And tundra to the north

Knows something gone unsaid.

Snow capped crests hold

Secrets whispered by the sun,

The lovers with the promises 

Scribbled in their palm

Remain silent

Invisible ink rarely speaks.

But the devout

They sing and shout

They pull back the blinds

From hypothetical skies

Interpret hidden wonders

For all who may hear.

If we must spend our days

Becoming underwhelming,

Skilled enough only to know

How deeply juvenile we are,
