Satisfaction is not in my nature

Follow me as I have a breakdown over Obi-Wan Kenobi in my tags. #userwit

New silly headcanon because my main source of enjoyment from star wars is making myself sad thinking about that sad old man.

When Obi-Wan returns to Padmé's ship after cutting Anakin down, Threepio has already brought Padmé inside. Being the fussy neat freak he is, he has also brought Obi-Wan's and Anakin's robes inside the ship: they are nowhere to be found on the floor.

And Obi-Wan, being the sad, broken man he is, held on to Anakin's robe for the next 20 years. This is why he has Anakin's gameboy advanced! Because it was in Anakin's robe!

But this is not all! Because, this, THIS:

is in no way THIS:

BUT THIS:

And Force do I wish I could see Vader's face HERE:

"Is that MY FUCKING ROBE????? Obi-Wan, what the hell-"

So yes, Obi-Wan Kenobi died in Anakin Skywalker's robes, and you will pry this from my cold dead hands

STAR WARS APPRECIATION WEEK 2023 MAY 19: FAVOURITE CHARACTER | DUO | TRIO ▸ ANAKIN SKYWALKER & OBI-WAN KENOBI

This was not Sith against Jedi. This was not light against dark or good against evil; it had nothing to do with duty or philosophy, religion or morals. It was Anakin against Obi-Wan. Personally. Just the two of them, and the damage they had done to each other.

I actually like it when ships hurt each other in long lasting and unforgiveable ways. I like it when they leave vicious, glaring scars. I like when they leave traumas. I like when they stab each other and torture each other and ruin each other’s lives and violate every inch of each other’s values. and I like it when they fucking kill each other permanently dead.

my ships when they hurt each other in long lasting and unforgiveable ways:

Basically,

i've gotten pushback on this post before about how inconsistent it is to claim nuance exists and then deny the sith (who canonically think in absolutes) that ambiguity. this is frustrating to me on so many levels. the way that star wars works is that the story is set within an explicitly defined framework of black and white morality, selfishness vs selflessness, the corruption of greed reflected in how the dark side disturbs the normal balance of the force.

where nuance is relevant to star wars is not in the morality, which is stark and clear (e.g. it's good to seek to help others instead of yourself, to respect life and only shoot when shot at, etc), or in the mechanics of the force, it's in how those moral stances operate inside a historical and political environment. there is nuance in how the jedi are trapped in a bind of having multiple obligations that can be contradictory, and they have to make judgement calls about how to serve as best as possible for the best possible outcome.

the sith's greed is simple, the jedi's altruism is complex. you can debate the moral calculus of the council when they made difficult decisions in lose-lose situations, without blaming the jedi and saying that 'evil is good actually' as if it's a valid take on the material. those who seek to read the order in bad faith (as a baby stealing cult) are not engaging with the version of star wars that exists anywhere other than the fanon funhouse mirror version in their minds.

all of these memes are a result of a conversation with an acquaintance at a friend's wedding. i knew this guy was a star wars super fan, and was excited to talk about the media i love so much. there was nothing worse than realizing his version of loving the material was the same as youtube theory bros who are high on their own "analytical skills" of completely ignoring genre and canon in order to be contrarian and superior to those who are so foolish as to care what the story actually says in the text.

I think if we can accept that there are things Jedi are shown capable of doing in canon that Cal is incapable of doing in the games due to video game mechanics (i.e. he cannot carve through locked doors or walls, and he cannot jump more than about 10 feet without dying), then we can accept the opposite as well: there are things Jedi are shown to be INCAPABLE of doing in canon that Cal IS capable of doing in the games due to video game mechanics (using the dark side in fights all the time without any real impact on him). Yes, Cal was given a "dark side" power-up ability, and yes, you can continue to use it for him over and over again and it seemingly has no real negative impact on his character. But this is how video games work, every time we get given an ability in the game, Cal is able to keep it for the rest of the game in order to explore new areas and fight new things. But that doesn't mean that that's how using the dark side actually would work for Cal within canon if he were shown in something like a film or TV show rather than a video game.

And if you look at the actual STORY within the game rather than the basic gameplay options, it's made pretty clear that Cal using the dark side is akin to losing himself. He CANNOT use it without that risk being there and he has to keep letting it go. The first time he uses it on Nova Garon, Merrin stops him by saying they've both lost enough people and she doesn't want to lose Cal, too. When they talk on Tanalorr before making it to the Temple, Cal expresses fear of losing himself. After the funeral, Cal says to Cere that he nearly lost himself during that fight with Bode. Over and over again they let you know through the STORY that Cal using the dark side is a bad thing that he isn't using without consequence even though the ability exists in gameplay without any impact.

Cal isn't a Gray Jedi, that's not how it works. The game is doing the best it can to tell you that the dark side WILL ultimately cause Cal to lose himself if he keeps using it even though it has to let you keep using the ability due to how video game rules work. Cal is a Jedi, full stop. The dark side is bad and twists everyone who uses it, full stop. Stop pretending video game gameplay rules are the same as the story it's actually telling when the dialogue practically spells it out for you.

“Kenobi is coming to realize, perhaps for the first time in his life, that his efforts to help others will only injure them.  As plans for escape and hopes of rescue fade, the gnawing fear that he will never be able to take action will grow in Kenobi’s heart.  To ease the burden of his fellow slaves, defiance will become compliance.  When Kenobi realizes he cannot help those around him, his spirit will break and he will be mine.”
