One of my favourite Extra™ Castiel moments is in (4.16) On the Head of a Pin where he twists the valve dripping water that ruined the devil’s trap. He was literally one foot away he could have just reached over and turned it off. There was NO reason or him to use his powers, but he’s just so Extra he had too. He’s so over dramatic and I love him.

I can’t even count how many times I got shivers watching this. Gen’s performance is outstanding. She was the perfect villain and somehow, even here, I find myself wanting to see things from her perspective because she has such an innocence, even while finally revealing how incredibly manipulative she was. Also in the last few seconds, hearing Sam start to whisper Dean’s name again before saying “He’s coming” got me good. I just love hearing the little things that the music covers up.

Who needs a heart anyway

Dean’s spent many car rides imagining how he’d tell Cas I love you.

Sometimes he thinks it’ll happen during a dangerous hunt. Cas saves Dean’s neck and Dean can’t help but gasp the words.

Sometimes he thinks it’ll happen during a moment so cliche, Dean has to lean into the romance. A meteor shower, maybe, where Cas’ eyes are alight as he describes the stars and he’s so beautiful that Dean can’t not whisper his secret.

Sometimes he thinks it’ll happen during an argument. Cas midway through shouting at Dean before it just clicks and the words spill out before Dean can stop them.

Sometimes, the worst times, Dean thinks it’ll happen at the end. Maybe it’s Cas choking on his own blood, or maybe it’s Dean rasping his last breaths. Maybe it’s both of them. In any case, the desperation would push those words out far too late.

But life is never like the daydreams, or the nightmares, and Dean’s I love you doesn’t come in a burst of romance, or anger, or desperation. It comes when Dean’s mouth is crammed with pancakes that Castiel had been practicing making, the phrase unexpected and messy and so full of delight that Castiel drops his spatula in surprise.

Now, Dean doesn’t fantasize about telling Cas I love you. He just says it.
