you were either first wave emo/scene 2006-2010 or like late wave emo 2010-2012. I feel like anything after that didnt capture the TRUE essence of emo. too much technology advancements and apps.. like it was fun when we had the shitty versions of imvu, blingee, myspace and fb with janky phones and watched torrented anime in 6 separate parts on youtube, listened to nitecore and bad techno music, watched hours worth of scene makeup and hair tuts on our laptops, rp’d with random ppl in chatrooms, dyed our hair with our friends, made kandi, got dressed up to walk to the mall, grocery stores or gas stations to buy makeup, monster energy, candy and cheap jewelry. and like, sit at the park and not even be glued to our phones. all we cared about was our hair and eyeliner. its cool to see people who didnt even live through it be so into the scene/emo aesthetic but im glad to have lived through it even a little bit. ANYWAY share your scene/emo nostalgia~
I was 2008-2013. My hair is thick and curly, so I never even attempted an emo/scene haircut. Back in that time, EVERYONE flat ironed their hair to the point where it was sharp and lifeless, even the preps. I didn’t straighten mine all the time, but I rocked it every couple of weeks. I wasn’t allowed to dye my hair, although I did take Sharpie markers to it on multiple occasions. I pretended to like some scene music, but I preferred more punk like Green Day and Paramore. We lived an hour from the nearest city, so trips to Hot Topic, Spencer’s, and Claire’s were taken on my parents’ time, which was every couple of months. I went to the occasional party, and Monster Energy was life. A friend actually had a Monster themed birthday party once, with the logo in icing on her cake and everything. We loved the internet, but it was different than how it is today. I remember helping a friend edit her MySpace layout, being tricked into playing the scary maze game, roleplaying vampires on message boards, uploading random emo aesthetic photos to DeviantArt that I took with my digital camera, and spending hours arranging my Pieces of Flair when Facebook first took off. Burning CDs was how we made our playlists of the month, and picking out the track listing was an art form. Also? Being the lucky one who got a new album, and making a copy to give to a friend who needed to be educated. I got my first phone during that time—a little black flip phone (NO CAMERA), which I decorated with glittery skull stickers and used until getting a smartphone in 2014. I remember getting my first makeup set, a black and purple eyeshadow from Claire’s, and just putting it ALL over and around my eyelids. I wore lace/fishnet gloves or cuffs almost every day, generally paired with skinny jeans, a studded belt, my trusty black Converse (where I’d change the laces each day to match my outfit) and a combination of black and neon accessories.
It was a unique time, for sure. :)
