(49/54) “We still take long walks together, even today. There’s a path through the forest near our house. Mitra still can’t stand the silence. She’ll walk off the path so she can hear the dry crunch of the leaves. She still talks the entire time, but these days our conversations don’t reach back as far as they used to. We mainly talk about the things we see. She’ll count her steps, count the houses, count the trees. Mitra’s memory is no longer her friend; it no longer supports her. But she still says ‘hello’ to everyone that she sees. And she’s still a queen, I am always at her service. These days we have become inseparable. If I do not see her for two minutes, I will find what room she’s in. I button her jacket. I tie her shoes. I handle all her medications. I do not grieve the situation. I feel gratitude that I am able to do these things for her, despite nature. My only grief is for her. Her memory was her greatest gift. It’s where I stored my treasures. I could tell her any verse, even once. And she could remember it forever. Now it will escape her after only a minute. Every day her world gets smaller and smaller. Tighter and tighter. It’s the oldest memories that she remembers most now. Recently she has been fixated on her hand. She keeps holding up her crippled hand, and asking: ‘Why did you ever marry me?’ When we were young in Tehran, her father had a tradition. Every morning he would insist on having the first cup of tea. He said it was the one that tasted best. He called it ‘the flower of the tea.’ So now when I brew our tea every morning, I will wait. Until Mitra is up. Until she’s ready. So that I can serve her the flower of the tea. Then as soon as we’ve finished the kettle, she’ll make me go outside. And pour the remains on the roots of our trees.”

The mind wants to live forever, or to learn a very good reason why not. The mind wants the world to return its love, or its awareness; the mind wants to know all the world, and all eternity, and God. The mind’s sidekick, however, will settle for two eggs over easy.
The dear, stupid body is as easily satisfied as a spaniel. And, incredibly, the simple spaniel can lure the brawling mind to its dish. It is everlastingly funny that the proud, metaphysically ambitious, clamoring mind will hush if you give it an egg.

life is like I have 34 unread messages from people I love and I know it’ll take 2 seconds to respond and I miss them, but for some reason I can’t bring myself to answer quite yet I have 5 minutes in the morning to decide if I’ll commit my day’s attention to creative projects I want to get done, taking a walk or a bike ride, organizing hair cuts and braving dentist appointments or if I don’t catch myself in time, the day will be swallowed up in scrolling, my focus flitting between screens I don’t know where the time goes because I used to be small and know so much and now I’m flirting with the end of my twenties and am so scared of everything how does this both feel so new and mundane all the time and where is the exit door to this spiral where I remember living gently, full breaths and unknotted shoulders can we look for that resting place together oh no it’s fine if you’re busy I wouldn’t know where to start we can try next week if it’s better

I think the only person I've met in real life with 100% career satisfaction was this gal I knew who was a presenter at a children's science museum and delivered every line like she was running a WWE match. Every time you passed the room where she was giving a presentation, you'd hear something like "WHO'S READY FOR CEPHALOPODS?!?" and the kids would go absolutely nuts cheering.

Maybe you're just tearing up because someone has been cutting onions

I mistook this for meaning that they had painted an actual cutting board with a picture of an onion… and got about 2 images in before I realized that’s not what they meant

“I’m happy sometimes. When I’m feeling loved, you know? When I walk home and my husband is there and he’s so happy to see me. I was really hesitant about getting married. My parents had a bad marriage. So my husband had to talk me into it. And I mean, he had to really push. But it’s been 40 years, and it gets better all the time. Because you grow closer together when you go through things. You understand each other more. I’ll tell you some basic things about him. He’s very, very bright. He’s always reading. He’s always learning new things and he loves to share them with me. He gets really happy when I’m happy. That’s really a big deal, you know? I mean; it really makes him happy. When I’m happy. You can see it.  Just the way he looks at me. Other people can see it, but I can certainly see it. And I can feel it. He really cares, you know? That’s not something you can just put on. I’ll give you an example. It was very hard for me to get pregnant. And when our son Brian was born, he was less than three pounds. Went down to two and a half pounds. And Paul was at the hospital every day. By my side the whole time. Every single moment; it was just like absolutely unbelievable. I didn’t have to ask him: can you be there? He was just there. Because he cared. Not everyone has that. I’m really very fortunate. I have someone who cares. What more could you want, you know?”

See, I’m less annoyed than a lot of people because to me that last montage felt more like a dream of Ted’s than anything else. And don’t forget, Bill Lawrence has pulled this before: with the finale of Scrubs we don’t talk about Scrubs Interns JD’s final moments involve him imagining what the future looks like for him, and it’s up to the audience to decide how much or how little will come true. It’s left very ambiguous what the canonical future holds for our heroes - which, let’s be honest, is a pretty Ted Lasso move to pull. After all, we never can tell.

But once you consider that, the montage makes a lot more sense if you read it happening in Ted’s mind. It’s all very Ted-coded, showing everything he wants for his England family: the team all hanging out together. Trent’s book as a success but not making Ted front and centre. Keeley pushing for a women’s team. Sam making the Nigerian team. Roy taking his first steps as a proper leader. Nate back on the coaching squad and getting on better with his dad. Jamie reconciling with his dad (that’s very Ted-coded). Beard’s ludicrously filtered wedding to Jane (which Ted doesn’t even appear in, because we never see ourselves in our own dreams).

(And let me tell you, even if nothing else is fantasy that definitely was; having lived near Stonehenge for over ten years I can guarantee you the weather is never like that.)

I suspect that executive meddling has a lot to do with it - it’s pretty clear that a lot of people involved with Ted Lasso don’t know whether that’s it for the Richmond universe or not - but the fact that we end that montage with Ted jerking awake really has me feeling like that was a serious case of Ambiguous Ending. Until anything else in the Richmond universe is confirmed , we’re left able to pick and choose which bits will come true and which won’t. Which, hey, I’m a bit of a sucker for, so I’m satisfied with that.

All of this. And Ted’s final speech to the locker room:

“Now regarding this second half? Yeah I don’t know what’s gonna to happen. You know what I mean? No one does. Sports would be a lot less fun if we did. You know? […] We don’t wanna know the future. No, no, we wanna be here right now.”

(Just substitute “life” for “sports”)
