Until Employment or the Apocalypse

I feel bad that I never fuck with my blog theme at all. Ever. But I'm not the one suffering looking at this thing; you are. Why are you doing a thing like that, by the way?

Do you remember that Aussie sword guy who used to talk about medieval weapons?

And, like, he seemed pretty good at talking about swords and shit. He seemed to have a good grasp of the history and tactics. He'd analyze movie weapons for their realism and that was fun. He did demonstrations with real weapons. For a time I really looked forward to his videos popping up in my feed.

He seemed like a harmless sword-fighting aficionado.

But then I guess he wanted to spread his wings. So he started down an anti-woke path. Giving questionable critiques about media and feminism. He started defending boob armor by showing historical examples even though most of those were decorative and not battle ready like in the games.

Then he admitted he was a fan of The Daily Wire.

And that was disappointing.

I missed him nerding out about swords, ya know?

Well, Shad decided to spread his wings again.

He has become...

*bad French accent* An artiste.

You see, he types words into a little box. Then a little robot does a google image search and steals a bunch of art. Then that robot reconfigures that art to be nearly indistinguishable from the source material. Well... aside from the occasional artist watermark.

Whoops!

A.I. art is very difficult. Sometimes when you type words into the box you get a woman with 5 lopsided anime tiddies. Or 20 fingers on one hand. It takes time and effort and experience to type in the perfect magic words so that you get something close to your imagination that doesn't belong in some sort of Lovecraftian horror ripoff.

For example, check out this cool "pirate hat" I asked A.I. to place on my head.

Clearly, I am not skilled enough at typing words into a box to get a proper pirate hat.

It. Is. Not. Easy.

I heard someone say you have to type things in a box for 10,000 hours before you start getting truly masterful generations.

I mean, you can't type "marathon runners" and expect that to actually work.

THIS REQUIRES SKILL, PEOPLE.

And I am a lowly amateur. I can only dream of becoming the box-typist Shad has honed himself into.

The thing is... Shad is very upset.

He is upset that you don't like his "art" and he is ready to die on this hill.

So... before he croaks on a mound of bullshit, he has something to show you. He has created something truly brilliant and when you see it, he is convinced you will validate his considerable efforts.

Before I show you his "Not. Easy." artistic masterpiece I'd like you to sit with what he has said for a second.

Ruminate in the verbiage.

Process the ideas and points of view presented.

Digest his plea for you to accept and love his hard won battle after typing words into a box to manifest his imaginings.

Have you sat?

Ruminated?

Processed?

Digested?

Remember that the entire reason the internet forced you to fill in Captchas for the past 14 years is because they were using your answers to train AI in image and text recognition. Of course the AI can read the text because the entire human race has been unable to use the internet without being forced to train it for over a decade. The fact that they are still trying to keep up the facade so they can keep charging for their captcha services is laughable since they have made the service useless by using it this way.

not to be that bitch, but the original captcha project was used to train computers to read badly printed words in newspapers and books that were being digitized. this changed in like 2014, about 5 years after captcha was bought by google

I remember seeing little footnotes on the pages with Captchas that would say something about how, by participating, I was not only protecting my privacy, but helping to transcribe documents! It gave me this positive association that probably made the transition to surveillance that much easier.

hard-right conservatives will be like "question everything" and then accept everything they were ever taught to believe about society plus whatever insane thing they happen to see in an email

The induction into fascism takes a launching pad, ya know? But after that, it only works if 99% of the people involved follow the leader. Fealty in exchange for safety, and damn anyone who disagrees. They say, "great minds think alike," but they will handily redact that "fools rarely differ." As long as you keep pulling in the same direction, never consider that you might be wrong about anything, and maul anyone that gets in your way, you're golden. For like 6 or 7 years maybe, and then you're probably gonna lose real bad. But ooh, baby, those 6 or 7 years!

This photo my roommate took of my gerbil belongs in the MoMA

This photo of Earl is getting some notes and it makes me happy - he passed at the end of November last year. I love seeing people look at this photo of him, it’s one of my favorites.

I love semantic drift

wheezing okay just so everyone knows. I too love semantic drift but that’s not what’s happening here. This is in fact a deliberate joke about semantic drift. this is not a scene from a 1940s film noir this is a scene from the 1995 sitcom The Nanny. This is on purpose!!

Reminds of that classic Great War Epic, A Thoroughly Polite Dustup

I'd tell y'all to look "gullible" up in the dictionary but it's not even in there sooooo

we don’t talk enough about how romeo + juliet 1996 was a pinnacle of artistry — from creative direction to fashion to the soundtrack to the set design to the cinematography

I understand why some people don’t like it but hello are we seeing this????

aaand it's been confirmed

i hope scream 7 flops and i am not watching nor supporting this 💖

Dude, I wish. This major motion picture will absolutely not flop, but the tiny shows and movies with minority actors and writers and queer plotlines can fire as many pro-Palestine workers as they like, and Tumblr will be all, "whehhh, but this tiny show won't survive without us watching it, so let's pretend the show runner isn't a Zionist who has already fired pro-Palestine people so I can see two straight guys kissing, whehhhhhgh."

They De-Tumblrized Ms. Frizzle

@transfagsculine

why would you leave this in the tags lmao

Allow me to explain:

Everyone dropping this pic

And talking about how the new frizz her is her niece, allow me to do a direct side by side instead

These are STILL not the same woman. Where is the icon fashion, the earrings (the chameleon, which might be in the new show idk I haven't watched it), the prominent hooked nose, the broader shoulders, the volume to her hair, the LIFE IN HER EYES

This frizzle looks like she's been called into the school board for inappropriate behavior and dress one too many times and has been broken.

Also others have said it before me but I couldn't find it in the scroll backs but they whitewashed all the kids too. They same face syndromed everyone to either be easier to draw or be more ambiguous so as not to offend or both or something, and it just makes me sad

Fuck it I did the digging cause I'm still mad

And that’s not even to mention what they did to the bus itself.

The old bus had a personality and life and fun and now it’s just… a bus.

HOW DO Y’ALL WHITEWASH A BUS?!

It's gives "anti abortion Jehova's Witness cartoon" now

This, I find, is an excellent example of how “aesthetic cleanliness” usually just means making something less interesting. Taking the bus and Frizz’s dresses as a relatively unproblematic, but very stupid, example first. What the showrunners have done here is seen the visuals of the original show and tried to declutter them for the tastes of modern audiences. The issue is that the taste they’re catering to is that of parents because they are generally choosing what children watch, and those parents don’t like clutter, and they see all of those fun shapes and colors as visual noise. YouTuber Tantacrul has a great video on how this effects children in music education. In short it’s why no children’s music toys have the capabilities for experimentation that normal instruments do, parents can’t stand “inharmonious sounds”

The much bigger problem here comes when this design philosophy bleeds into the character designs. What they’ve tried to do is make the show easier to look at by smoothing everything out making it all look a little more “cohesive.” Problem is that when you homogenize everything you, well… homogenize everything. Skin tones are lightened, curls are straightened, Noses are smoothed, fat kids are made skinny, it all becomes less diverse and less interesting. It paints a picture of an executive who thinks that people of color and other marginalized people won’t sell, their version of the magic school bus will be much neater, much more fitting to show our kids.

TL;DR:

Problem a) they tried to declutter the visuals to cater to modern parents who like “clean aesthetics,” without considering what will be fun for kids to watch

Problem b) in doing so they whitewashed the character designs and send the deeply insidious message that certain people don’t fit the desired aesthetic and are thus, not fit to be represented in kids tv

that's cool! who's the dude just chilling there?

I’m guessing it’s the dude that got “passed over” considering he looks like a Generic Country Singer

Random country singer dude who had a hit covering her song maybe? Fast Car is not a 2023 song.

The guy is Luke Combs, who covered the song this year, and it went to #1 in the country charts

Tracy Chapman won the CMA for song of the year for it, because that award is for songwriters, and she wrote the song

@waknatious I'm tagging you since I'm adding extra info after you already saw it lol

I'm actually surprised that this cover was never discussed on Tumblr, tbh, because Luke Combs didn't change the words. He said he didn't want to make it his song... it was his favourite song as a kid, and he wanted to expose a new generation to it, but he also wanted them to know the original, so he left the lyrics the same.

So like... the #1 on country music stations featured a man singing the line "I work in the market as a checkout girl". Which like... you would never expect from country music.

But I think it was the right thing to do, because if he'd changed it, there probably would have been a lot of people who didn't realize it was a cover

it's a decent cover, too.

I like how there was a brief surge in thinkpieces over whether it was appropriate for him to cover it, and she immediately shut them down with "No, I like it and it's making me a ton of royalties, so go away".

imma say it. “kung fu panda” did more for body positivity and saying that  you can be fat and still be healthy and liked than ANYTHING any beauty companies trying to get your money.

kfp also respects women more than any beauty company too.

also it had a positive relationship between an adopted child and his stepfather even after he found out he was adopted

Hey yknow how Viper was born without fangs, but instead of being rendered helpless as her family thought she’d be, she instead used her other skills to become the best warrior in her clan?

And how Tigress had severe, destructive anger issues when she was younger, but instead of being painted as a “problem child” she was instead taught her how to channel her emotions into something constructive?

And how Crane trained extra hard to impress a girl, and was by all rights the hero of his own story, but he still didn’t get her in the end? And how the girl isn’t shamed for it?

It’s almost as if you get more mileage out of treating your characters (and the people they resemble) with compassion than you do just shamelessly stamping them with your own misconceptions and hang ups.
