There wolf, there castle...

@w3rewolf-th3rewolf / w3rewolf-th3rewolf.tumblr.com

HI EVERYBODY!!! Non-binary pan-romantic asexual, age 25 (they/them). Posts what ever I feel like...so yeah, whoot.  Feel free to chat or ask me anything!

While I was working on the show as a Pipeline TD I had always pictured Katie as queer but I figured is was just wishful thinking.  Many people, especially those in underrepresented groups, are used to projecting onto characters while the creators leave things ambiguous.  But here she was, a girl who didn’t really fit in, trying to find herself and her people, who was into making weird stuff that others didn’t understand…in my mind there was no doubt.

I had wanted to ask the director, Mike Rianda, about Katie’s sexuality, but I was scared.  Scared that either he would say she was straight and break that dream for me, or leave it open to interpretation which while neither confirms or denies her queerness means that people will automatically code her as straight.

With representation it has to be explicit, or people who oppose it will find any possible hole/explanation/workaround to disprove it.  But on the other hand, a person’s sexuality isn’t their entire identity, so when characters are defined by their queerness (especially in media where the focus isn’t gender or sexuality) it feels hollow and token.

Then one of my queer co-workers messaged me that there were discussions about changing Linda’s line at the end of the movie to “are you dating anyone and will she be coming home with you for thanksgiving” and I cried.  Full-on sobbing joyful ugly tears.  I was so excited, but also so scared…I knew that it was a long-shot since most companies play it safe when it comes to that kind of representation.  But it seemed like Mike was really willing to fight to keep the line in the movie.

There was a giant e-mail thread where some of my coworkers gave their insights and opinions on the line change, but the most beautiful part was that this conversation was started by Mike because he wanted to ask people in the LGBTQ community about making Katie a lesbian.  It was clear that he and Jeff Rowe (the other director) put a lot of thought not only on if she should be explicitly queer, but how it should be expressed within the movie.  He wanted responses from us, and unlike a lot of diversity initiatives, he was willing to fight for it but he wanted to make sure we’re fighting for the right thing.

The discussions were an open arena where we could voice our thoughts freely.  They realized that they had an opportunity and a platform for real representation.  As “very much cis white dudes” Mike and Jeff wanted to see if Katie being LGBTQ felt right to members of the community.  And my coworkers were just as passionate about Katie being gay as I was.

“It may look like a small thing, but it represents a lot” - Guilherme Paiva, Animator

“it's great to finally have a movie where there's an LGBT character who's allowed to exist and have a role that isn't just ‘the gay character’ or to have the whole film be about them being LGBT” - Jabari Cofer, Lead Animator

“I think it's bold, and I really love the character you've created and written of Katie. Would love to see this a reality where it's out there, but understand there could be some push back from higher ups, so I really appreciate [it]” - Jessica Giang, Layout Artist

“I appreciate the thought that you guys are putting into this. It honestly warms my heart seeing how much you genuinely care about getting this right, it really means a lot.” - Chelsea Gordon-Ratzlaff, Lead Animator @not-quite-normal

I don’t know all of the work they put in but it was an uphill battle to keep the line in the movie.  Mike actively defended the representation, using our responses to bolster his campaign.  We were all a bit scared, going to production and even the studio execs to take a chance on doing something like this, but the line stayed.

Katie is a creative teenager who is struggling to find her place in the world.  She has a loving and supportive family that doesn’t really understand her.  She’s the kind of character that I wish had been present when I was growing up.  Having this kind of explicit representation not only normalizes queerness, but embraces it.  But it’s a risk to do something like this, especially in animation which targets a wide and impressionable audience.

A conversation is only as important as the people involved in it.  Representation is such a complex aspect of media that many companies prefer to keep things simple within their own comfort zone.  But people are complex, and it’s up to art to illustrate that.  By actively listening to queer members of the crew “the Mitchells vs the Machines” was able to create a fun, imaginative, and emotional story that just happens to have a lesbian as the lead.

…I mean, if I was an elephant, that’s exactly what I would do.

“Come on lads it’s time to fucking uuuhhh step on some things”

is this that Smashing Pumpkins band

You all act like this is weird but this is exactly what humans do with crunchy leaves and other smooshable things.

NOW THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT

Projects laundry room cheat codes…

Cuh a real one for this!

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO DO LAUNDRY IN A BUILDING I’M ALREADY PAYING TO LIVE IN????

Avatar

This could be important for my fellow poor people who need to save as much as they can

I did the math.  If I do a load of laundry every week (I technically have to do two, as my undershirts are washed at a different temperature and air dried), so its $6 a week.  That’s $312 per year.  There are six units in my building, assuming they are spending the same on average (but probably more), that’s $1872 per year that my landlord pulls in.  I can FRIGGIN GUARANTEE YOU that the collective building *DOES NOT* spend $1872 per year in water and power to run the washer and dryer.  I also pay $1200 per month in rent, which is $14,400 per year.  Between 6 units that’s $86,400, plus the laundry fees lets call that $88k that the building pulls in per year.  I can FUCKING GUARANTEE YOU this building does *NOT* use that much in water and property taxes, and every unit pays for its own electricity. My landlord owns 10 buildings, all of the same design.  The entire lot of 10 buildings has one superintendent.  The buildings do not have AC, their appliances have not been replaced in a minimum of 20+ years, and the washer and dryer are…well they’re ancient. I feel *ZERO* sympathy if I can make this work in the laundry room.

Reblogging again becuase this is great

the thing about being someone who’s never catcalled is that you start to wonder why like is it because im ugly???

and then you realize that youre judging your worth by whether or not you are objectifiable to a man and thats so fucked up like honestly its so fucked up

but the worst part about the patriarchy is that it still sits at the back of your mind regardless like “nobody thinks youre pretty because they dont see you as a sex object” like somehow thats a desirable thing and it fucks me up

You’re either public property or completely invisible.

headcanon that both erik and charles are absolute shite at chess but they both assume they’re fantastic because they never play anyone else

Charles probably suspected something was wrong when Erik’s rook “jumped” Charles’ Bishop, but didn’t want to admit he didn’t know that rule.

“Ah, the ‘moving three pawns at once’ opening. Audacious, Erik, audacious.”

The prison gards in x2 watching the game over the cameras like… “W-What are they…what’s going on - Matt look at this shit.”

honestly tho that scene in the incredibles where mr. incredible sees the names of all the old super heroes that used to be his friends / that he knew from Back in the Day and how every one of them has been killed by syndrome is such a chilling scene for so many reasons

like for one, everyone he knew is dead at this point and has been killed on the same island he’s at now and two, its heartbreaking bc that means that almost every hero wanted to try out being a hero again despite the laws against it and wanted to try and help someone out and relive their glory days, only to be straight up murdered like fuck that scene is just so fuckin intense

I think the core of that scene for me is, when you’re insane like me and you go through it frame by frame, you can work out that Gazerbeam defeated the omnidroid twice - the only super we have enough information to confirm did so. I always wondered about his body in the cave, how and why he got the password… But it makes sense. This thing goes haywire, gets an upgrade, and goes haywire again? He must have been hella suspicious! So he does what any good superhero would do - tries to get to the bottom of what’s really happening on Nomanisan Island. During the process he’s clearly caught and wounded but has just enough time to get himself somewhere he can leave a final message, just praying that the next super to come along will find it and break the cycle. Gazerbeam is my hero.

Incredibles 2 has a lot to live up to

All of this and…

I’m just realizing that the name is No Man Is An Island???? As in, everyone needs someone to depend on and connect with, no one is ever completely alone or should act all on their own.

Also Gazerbeam probably has X-ray vision–so he not only survived long enough to defeat the Omnidroid, he had the ability to see Syndrome entering the password.

Holy guacamole! I should pay more attention, I don’t think I got any of that stuff!

does anyone think about the fact that now mr. incredibles has to live w/ the fact that all his friends getting killed by syndrome could have been avoided if he had just been nicer to syndrome from the beginning

^I was thinking that from the beginning reading this and was shocked it went through so many comments before anyone pointed that out.

Syndrome waited until his machine was almost ready to go before asking Bob to come to Nomanisan. He also was surprised to find out that he was married to “Elastigirl”, which means he likely built his list and went through everyone else before finally deciding it was time to kill Bob.

Also, Syndrome literally didn’t find Bob until the start of the movie. He found Frozone and was stalking him. If Lucius hadn’t hung out with Bob, then Frozone was going to be the next one lured. There’s literally a scene of Mirage realizing that the guy in the car with her target is Mr. Incredible. He wasn’t going through the list, he was stalking and finding every former Super he could, luring them to the island, and then killing them, for the sake of improving his robot. Finding Bob was just a happy accident, and Syndromes obsession with him meant that upon finding a bot that could beat Bob, he figured he’d hit perfection and was ready.

and like, let’s be real here in the intro Buddy was crossing the line the second he showed up, Mr. Incredible mentioned he’d been very nice to Buddy, via signing a ridiculous amount of autographs and doing pictures and stuff, and that he was not going to risk a childs life as a sidekick (albeit in less words). Buddy literally showed up by breaking into his car, and then stalked him all evening until he was arrested. That’s disturbingly obsessive behavior, there’s no amount of niceness that would stop Syndrome, it was an impossible situation. No amount of nice was going to appease Syndrome, the second he faced any sort of rejection from Mr. Incredible he was going to lose it and go supervillain. After his arrest he should have gotten put into therapy, but yknow, set in like. the 50′s. so it makes sense he fell through the cracks when the cracks were a goddamn canyon. Don’t victim blame Mr. Incredible.
