@vulpesmellifera

I post things related to writing, art, Mystrade, Hannigram, Good Omens, and Johnlock. I now tag it so you can ignore what you don’t want to see, and get the content you came for. 😊

Spooky Fics

There is nothing I love more than a good horror story. Or even a half-way decent one. If you share in my love of Halloween and the fascinating, the strange, and the horrifying, you might enjoy some of my fics.

Johnlock:

Haunted - Plagued by the past, John moves himself and his daughter to a new flat for a fresh start - and it's not 221B Baker Street.

While he grapples with new knowledge and old guilt, he's confronted with odd neighbors and strange noises in the night. But is it the new flat, or is John Watson losing his grip on reality?

Rose Madder - With a history of bad choices firmly behind him, Sherlock Holmes has established himself with New Scotland Yard as a brilliant if egotistical solver of crime. An island unto himself, he's avoided all thoughts and urges of sentimental or physical attachment to another person not only for the sake of The Work, but for the equilibrium of his Mind Palace.

Until he meets John Watson. This seemingly ordinary yet compelling man catches Sherlock's interest as something more than a mere roommate.

When John moves in, he brings with him something unexpected: a strange family heirloom.

The nightmare begins.

From a Well, Dark and Deep - Sherlock Holmes is desperately trying to reconcile his newfound memories and feelings within his transport—a transport that won’t quit with the nightmares and the strange, fiddly anxieties that crop up at the most inopportune moments. On the advice of his psychiatrist—not that he’s thrilled to be taking the man’s advice, but needs must—he's going to mark the anniversary of Eurus’ torments. That explains why he visits the well. What he finds at the well, though, is entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, John Watson has finally come to terms with something he’s ignored his entire life. He’s ready to share that something with Sherlock, except Sherlock isn’t acting himself. It's not the time for confessions, and John determines he must get to the bottom of his best friend's affliction before he can reveal anything.

And you, dweller of the deep, rouse once more from your slumber.

Mystrade:

The Ghost in the Graphite - Maybe he could have been an artist, if it weren't for the fact that the dead can possess him and communicate through his drawings. He's spent his life avoiding idleness with pencil and paper. The sensation of possession is rarely pleasant.

But the spirits are persistent, and if they can't get him while he draws, they'll invade his dreams instead.

Greg Lestrade joined the police force to placate the ghosts that haunt him. After his greatest asset in solving crime flings himself from a building, Greg is once again faced with too many sleepless nights. When a forceful spirit and a troubling case appear, an innocent man could end up in prison. Out of desperation, Greg turns to the one person who can help him: Mycroft Holmes.

As attraction blooms between them, the case becomes far more twisted and dangerous than expected. The full moon approaches. Time is running out.

Among the Roses - The moon shone brightly on the garden, the colours of the roses now muted blue-greys like pebbles along the shore. A shiver ran down his spine as the hairs on his neck tingled.

“Hello?” he said. Looked to the left and the right. Not a soul. “Who’s there?” His grip on the umbrella handle was clammy.

A foghorn bellowed in the distance. Clouds crept over the moon’s face, casting long, gauzy shadows over the garden.

Mycroft stepped back, and shut the door. He tried to quell the racing of his heart as he stood there, listening.

“I’ve been waiting,” the man said, his voice as rough as waves hitting the rocks.

The Tenth Muse - Mycroft sees things other people can’t. Lights, spectres, shades, demons, phantasms, and creatures that no one else can see. Voices no one else can hear. Colours eddying around people’s bodies, visible only to his eyes.

It isn't deduction for Mycroft; it's a living nightmare that leads to self-imposed isolation. When Sherlock "dies," Mycroft finds himself reaching out for a golden slice of happiness, just one person to call his own in a landscape of horrors.

Down on his luck John Watson answers an advert for a paid role in an experimental play. Enter William Scott with a most unusual proposition: help him test run a two person immersive experience, oh and by the way there is sex and romance involved.

Teaser for Chapter 56 below the fold:

John and Sherlock navigate commitments, community, old demons and an impromptu party.

From the text:

“Don’t go pissing off my flatmates again, though. I do have to live here.”
Sherlock’s forehead, and then eyes appeared above the edge of the blanket as he pulled it away from his view.
“For now,” Sherlock said softly.
“For now,” John said in return. Beneath the blanket he dropped the book on his lap and petted Sherlock’s legs. He felt Sherlock begin to relax into him. They both stared fondly at each other.
“Did you say you’re moving back to Baker Street?” said Miho, joining them from the dining area.
“What?” said John. “No, I mean, not yet. You have sharp ears. But don’t worry about it—”
“Beth!” Miho cried, “John’s going to move back in with William!”
“I meant to keep this quiet, have a nice chat at some point when it was all closer to the time,” said John.
“Too late,” said Sherlock.

John is doing much better, and gets to meet with the veterans group formed around Miho's play. Sherlock is dealing with the activity around Henri's evidence and interrogation. And breaking news on that front shifts things for everyone.

Mystrade Is Family

Hi, Everyone!! We are starting the fourth year of our annual Mystrade May event. This year’s theme is FAMILY!

FAQ:

1. Can I post a WIP?: Yes, as long as at least one chapter is added to the collection by August 1, 2023.

2. What do you mean by “Family”? : “Family” is a wide range, and we encourage you to interpret this in a way that is meaningful, and a *central* theme of the story. This could include marriage, having or dealing with children, interactions between siblings, meeting the parents, and other relationship activities that fall under “Family” for you.

3. Can my story have other relationship pairings?: Yes, if Mycroft and Greg are the primary pairing featured in the story.

4. Can I post crossovers with another fandom?: Yes, if all other guidelines are followed.

5. I posted a story, but it’s not showing up in the collection!: All stories added to this collection are moderated, meaning they must be confirmed by a collection moderator before they are added. Stories will be confirmed within 24 hours - please be patient :)

6. Why are you announcing this so late???: Listen, 2023 happened to me in a quick way. As compensation, this collection will remain open for new submissions for three months: May 1, 2023  through August 1, 2023.

Rules:

1. This should be a new work that hasn’t been posted anywhere else yet. (if you want to post early, or late, just let me know - we can be flexible.)

2. The main pairing should be Mycroft Holmes and Greg Lestrade.

3. The story should feature a main theme or element of Family

Please use hashtags for #MystradeIsFamily and share this post with your friends and fellow Mystraders. Twitter is a mess these days, so I don’t know where the kids are hanging out anymore. Hopefully here :D

Wild how the queer community has been fighting tooth and nail for generations to have some semblance of inclusion and just the desire to not be beaten, arrested, or killed for existing.

Then there is less than 10 years of policies put in place to help us start being treated more humanely and the Conservative party is like “Actually we rather you die again” openly and proudly.

Wild how allowing ppl to live has made them so angry and more open about their fascism.

Meanwhile half of the younger queers online are too preoccupied with terminology and gatekeeping fandom engagement while our country actively works to eradicate the community honing social media to propagate propaganda.

It is going to sound mean and im not gonna sugarcoat it:

Telling other lgbtqia members that using the term “queer” is problematic and bad is more aligned with conservative’s views of hiding and destroying queerness. When you get that gatekeeping towards your own community you are making it easier to break us apart.

FAQ on Writing Signed Language

(and deaf/HoH characters)

An amalgamation of all the questions that have come up repeatedly since the original posts. All the people who wanted to be tagged have been put under the read-more link at the bottom.

“Is it okay to use italicized speech for signed dialogue, even if I describe faces and signs?”

The short answer is a simple no. I’ve been asked this a lot, repeatedly, and I can understand why- other languages are, it’s the common mode of operation for writers when encountering a language their viewpoint character either doesn’t speak, or doesn’t understand. Differentiation between spoken language is needed in this way.

However, signed language is not spoken, and the struggle to have it recognized as a “real languge” has been long. Many people, as the result of a lack of education by no fault of their own, still don’t see it as such. Because of this, using italics to seperate signed and spoken language can do harm for the recognition of signed languages.

Also, signed language is usually in the same language of the spoken variant, while not being the same language at all: although respected as a language of it’s own, sign and spoken language are like cousins living in the same household of language, and so would be treated just like the rest of the family.

“If not using italics, how do I differentiate?”

With the description of sign, and facial expressions. For spoken language, you would write about the sharp tone of Samuel’s voice, the way it rises in tone; for signed language, you would talk about the way that Mark’s fists are tighter and his signs louder (wider).

This kind of differentiation may come naturally to a majority of people who speak signed languages, because many of us can think in signed language, but for people who do not or who use spoken language more frequently, it is understandably more difficult. It will take a little more work at first, but eventually it will come naturally in the flow of signed dialogue.

“How do I describe the tone and non-verbal inflections of sign?”

By facial expressions in combination with the signed words.

I understand that not everyone is able to read facial expressions, for a variety of reasons (I struggle too) so here’s a list of facial expressions as verbal inflections in sign:

  • Facial exclamation mark - For amusement, sarcasm, yelling and making points. This is done by an O mouth shape and widened eyes.
  • Facial question mark - For questions, confusion and when challenging someone. This is done by a simple raise of the eyebrows during the main word of the question. E.g, Name Yours What [raised eyebrows on what].

And some examples of how you might use these:

  • Anger - The signs become hard, sharp and fast. The fist isn’t just touched to his chest, it’s slammed in; elbows go everywhere. His face is widened in a facial exclamation mark, brow furrowed, the signs become ungainly and faster, just like speech can become faster and louder.
