Cosmic Repost

@voidlesslove

Just call me Voidless |19|

In light of the recent giga fuckups with tech in general, but particularly with Reddit and Twitter, I would like to propose an new Circle of Hell just for Techbros.

In this new circle, they will be forced to reinvent the wheel and try to sell it to each other.

Additions and critique welcome.

if ea nasir has a million fans, then i'm one of them if ea nasir has one fan, then i'm that fan if ea nasir has no fans, that means i'm dead bless this man who sucked at his job (i will keep drawing niche history memes until i cark it)

I'm starting to get smile lines.

How lovely to have smiled so often that happiness permanently etches itself into your face

How metal to have lived a life where your face now pre-warns people not to fuck with you

How resilient to have cared so strongly that empathy is now visibly displayed on your face

How ornithological to have so many corvid friends who love standing on your eyeballs that they've left permanent footprints on your face

pleaaaaaase y'all the process of having a manufacturing facility declared kosher has nothing to do with a rabbi blessing the food

pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase stop

This touches on something I feel like most Christians (cultural and/or practicing) reaaaaallllly don’t get which is that rabbis traditionally aren’t clergy/priests in the Christian sense.

A rabbi isn’t a divinely-ordained speaker-for-God whose primary role is leading worship. Traditionally, rabbis are experts in Jewish law, practice, culture, history, etc.

A rabbi doesn’t have any sacred/spiritual/magical powers to bless things that any other Jew doesn’t have. (And that’s not how blessing things works in Judaism anyway. It’s an expression of gratitude, not a transmutation or instillation of magic divine power.)

The reason a rabbi is involved is to *make sure everything’s being done correctly.* Because they’re an *expert*.

Not to “bless” anything to fill it with godpowers or whatever.

Yes yes this.

You call in a rabbi to supervise and make sure that a kosher food production facility is set up properly the same way that you call in a master electrician to check and make sure all the lines are set up correctly. The electrician isn't blessing your production line any more than the rabbi is - they're both there to make sure shit is being done right.

So what you’re saying. Is the rabbi is like kOSHA?

This made me laugh so hard I wheezed.

white people please just purchase native artwork and jewelry from native people i keep seeing idiot white people be like “waaah i wish i could support native creators but its cultural appropriation” girl why would beaders sell you their earrings then. just dont get a medicine wheel or a thunderbird then like damn it is that easy

If Native folks are making it to sell to white people with the approval of their tribe, it’s not “appropriation”–its support and appreciation! So yes, buy that native-made dream catcher, but not the mass produced fakes made by white people. Like, you can go to a pow wow and buy native crafts there, too.

This semester in college we’ve been working with a company in an indigenous museum to help their sales

They work with native artists in all of Brazil, so the site is in portuguese

Buying from indigenous artists is not appropriation!

Trees, like animals, can also experience albinism, though it is extremely rare.

the reason it’s rare is because without chlorophyll, the plant can’t get energy, and dies shortly after sprouting unless it has some other source of food. so if you see a plant as big as the one in the picture that doesn’t have any green in its leaves, it’s getting its nutrition from the roots of a neighboring plant of the same species, feeding on the sugars created by the other plant’s photosynthesis.

albino plants are basically vampires.

For a long time, scientists thought they were parasites, and couldn’t figure out why the bigger plants didn’t release chemicals to kill them.

Turns out, the lil’ ghost redwoods benefit their hosts by filtering toxins and acting as a sort of backup immune system.

They’re vampires, and they’re commensal, symbiotic mutualists!

this is super cool! I had no idea

This is among the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

we’ve already discovered forests where trees share nutrients with young or disadvantaged trees and forests where trees can ask their neighbors for some extra food (they literally send a signal requesting aid, via the web of fungus that connects their roots) and forests where surrounding tees will keep a tree alive even when it has been reduced to a stump through some tragedy…

so, while i love the playfulness of “vampire” and i commend the specificity of “commensal, symbiotic mutualists” i think it’s worth considering, at this point, if “member of the community” might not be at least as apt

There are numerous species of plants that have just evolved to not have chlorophyll because they yoink nutrients from fungi or other plants. It’s pretty neat!

Lads it's time we cry over tree networks

slapping modeling clay around blindly without thought or purpose, i look down and find a perfectly sculpted replica of myself seated at a table with a lump of modeling clay before me, similarly shaped into a still smaller instance of the same scene. and i am afraid to look up

This happened to the sumerian gods.

Let me reveal two things with one picture: my hand and my first 5 star read this year.

I loved this. The world building is phenomenal. The world was creative, the creatures are making sense. The world and the characters are interacting, it's not just a setting, it's the whole point. The characters are interesting, they have layers (of multiple trauma). They are according to their age and are not annoying, which is a high bar for young people. This is kinda dark, but not too dark. It was perfect for my taste, especially with the fact that there is no romance in it, apart from the family drama. I loved the bickering, the fact that the different people have different kind of humour, but they make it work?? To be one big good thing? I just can't.

Will I be recommending this book to everyone in the next twenty years? Yes. Yes, I will, and I won't be ashamed of it.

Check out the author's tumblr: @muffinlance

hello hello hello everyone!!!! local weird archivist, lesbian, and mythology nerd here. did you know I also make stuff? now you do, and even better you can get some custom stuff!!

I make a lot of book recommendation lists for friends and work (check out some examples here), and I realized I have a lot of fun doing it, so I want to do it for other people!! if you would like custom recommendations on any topic you’re interested in, fill out the commission form here and I’ll make you one!!

I also have a literal degree in music, and one of my friends recently commissioned me to transcribe some of her favorite songs into (viola) sheet music; I hadn’t even thought of that as a commission idea before but now that I’ve done it I think it’s super cool, so if you want a song for you or a friend or sibling or parent put onto sheet music and you can’t find it online, commission me here!! I really want to do these, so please do commission me! I can translate vocal lines to instrument lines, straight up notate existing vocal/guitar/bass lines, and even do extra stuff if you have more time and money (email me, I would love to do complex projects!!)

also please feel free to share this around!!! I want to make cool stuff for cool people, and sharing is the best way to help me do that. I hope you guys like and share this, and I can’t wait to start making cool stuff soon!!!

To new, inexperienced drivers:

so idk if they teach you this in drivers’ ed class or whatever, but if you see someone in the opposite direction flashing their high beams at you, they’re NOT being a dick. they’re saying, “SLOW DOWN, I just saw a police car back there”.

If I hadn’t known that today, I wouldn’t have noticed the police car hiding in its fox hole and gotten a ticket for going 20 over the speed limit. and I’m glad I don’t have to pay $80 for a dumb mistake!!!

In deer country this is also used to warn others about a herd up ahead. In either case, the double flash means that some nonsense is occurring and ya gotta slow down!

Double-flash also means “turn on your headlights”. Basically, if someone’s flashing their brights, pay super-close attention and figure out what’s going on.

Avatar

They could ALSO be flashing them to tell you to turn YOUR brights off because you’re blinding them! It’s common courtesy to turn your brights off for oncoming traffic, but not everyone knows this~

Avatar

I’ve also seen it used to warn of an accident ahead. Basically anytime someone flashes their brights at you, if your own lights are 1) on, and 2) not on bright, you can take it to mean “slow down and pay attention for the next stretch of road particularly.”

Whether that’s for a speed trap, a herd of deer, or four fire trucks, two ambulances, and a dozen squad cars all clustered around what used to be two vehicles, slowing down and paying attention is good for you and can save you a lot of money and/or heartache.

i mean, how could you possibly use healing powers for evil

Avatar

Heal them wrong, awfully awfully wrong.

The muscle tissue becomes intertwined in ways that press nerves together and leave the muscle functionally useless and a source of hellish pain with each move. Overgrow bones so they lock joints in place, or end up bursting out from muscle and flesh. Cause an over abundance of nerve endings so pain is amplified and much easier to inflict. Fuse a limb to the main body or another limb by healing their wounds in such a way that they meld together, so they’d have to rip open both to regain normality.

It wholly depends what your setting understands as ‘healing’, whether it is ‘restoring to a specific previous state of being’ or ‘an exact science that requires precise control over each function and intent’, the latter being the one these examples have been written with in mind.

this post was a joke, but you're 100% right. the character in question has even already threatened to do similar things, like inducing cancer in someone. there's definitely a lot of ways that "encouraging the body's natural processes" can in fact be a very bad thing
