birds can be so disproportionate it’s actually so funny. one of life’s greatest delights
african jacana
green heron
black winged stilt
south phillipine dwarf kingfisher. honestly most kingfishers but this one especially
japanese paradise flycatcher
kiwi wing + how big they are for reference
white bellbird. i just don’t think they should be able to do that
the sword billed hummingbird is one that always gets me
Tawny frogmouth. Nightjars in genera look like they've got tiny little beaks when they're closed
and then they open their mouth and it is a not tiny at all beak.
I remember you mentioning that one shouldn't include ftl tech in a sci fi universe just for the sake of it. I agree that not doing that is often more fun (see The Three Body Problem), but what are your thoughts on a universe which has access to ftl but is losing it? (My current worldbuilding features a form of ftl which is getting progressively slower as the universe ages, eventually becoming sub-light)
that's definitely a use of ftl technology that makes a universe more interesting rather so hell yeah i love that
I really do think I'm making something interesting, but I've stared at it so long it's hard to tell
If you could add one law to Asimov's three (anywhere in the hierarchy) to make the system as watertight as possible, what would it be?
i wouldn't. the system is beyond repair.
Correct.

non-glib bio (will be edited constantly):
- i make music and publish it on my bandcamp. i am currently working on an album called Cicada, but it’s very very hard to make progress when you’re actually working on something ambitious and not just going on autopilot getting every creative idea out there as fast as possible like i was doing for the first year of releasing music. i’m proud of what i have so far, though.
- i stream indie games sometimes on twitch.
- i like weird slow metal music. personal favorites include Cult of Luna, Ufomammut, Isis, and Neurosis.
- i like animation. i’m not picky about its country of origin, but due to circumstances that means in practical terms i like anime. personal favorites include Evangelion and the Monogatari series. you can see what i’ve watched here, please bug me about it ! i like sharing my opinions on art.
- i like language. i have half-finished many conlangs, but i’m currently working on one that seems to be going pretty alright. i don’t have any formal linguistics education, but i hope to change that in the future. historical linguistics is a particular interest of mine, though i admit i don’t know enough about it.
- i am in some sense queer. the specifics are none of your concern.
if that sounds interesting, follow me. or don’t, i can’t control what you do. you can even follow me if that doesn’t sound interesting. the freedom of choice is such a wonderful thing, isn’t it? even the act of informing yourself of the choices before you is lovely. you can breathe ! you can feel, you can look, you can experience, you can take in all the joys and beauty of this lovely world of ours ! what a wonderful thing it is to be alive.
This is like the sixth time I see someone complain about some annoying thing on twitter that I've somehow managed to dodge entirely, maybe I'm just accidentally good at curating
im getting more and more convinced that all great art is fetish art. if a piece of art is really important to you, truly changed your life, it probably gave the author a boner at some point.
I'm into so many things that I could make every character in a story related to one of them without anyone noticing, and I probably will
one day I'll have a full set of plate armor
God willing, I will someday be the reason Sweden's steel export ceases
This is why art is important, in case you were wondering.
God, I hope I don't see a followup article about kids feeding actual fish plastic
