I think this moment with the drums symbolize Alice and Reko's dynamic.
They always need more time. Alice is not fast enough to find and repair the drums, which would've made Reko feel better. Then he's unable to work up the courage to give Reko the bongos before a doll replaces her, and finally, one of the siblings dies suddenly before the other one can say their goodbyes.
Literally the tragedy in their relationship could be summed up with the sentence "A little too late."
