The architectural qualities of this wonderful stone staircase need no embellishment. The stairs, made of unmatched stone blocks, flare out at the bottom, creating a natural place to sit in the generous-sized hallway.

...the focus of this coir-covered staircase is an ornately carved balustrade which doubles back sharply to create an elaborate linear pattern. The space by stairs is often wasted; here it is piled with unusual rustic baskets.

Many different woods are combined to create a warm, personal living space. The flowing curves of a Victorian sofa and bentwood chairs serve as a counterpoint to flat areas of wood in the paneling and curved inner wall, as well as to the angles of the ceiling beams. Carpet and silver Mylar screens are the materials used to cover two walls in a family living room designed by Jack Lenor Larsen. The designer carried the honey-colored wall-to-wall carpet up the end walls for total integration of the walls and floor.

Plywood paneling introduces a light, modern feeling in the foyer-living room of an old house. It is used to cover a plaster wall and a brick chimney that extends to the second-story level.
