I’m not even done watching but I had to come tell you about this immediately. You all need to watch Wolf Children. It’s Monster Romance done with so much gentleness and empathy. It’s all about love and acceptance.
So what this is is a story about a male werewolf and female human that fall in love and have two children. Both their kids are shifters, like their father. It’s very bittersweet because the father dies right after the birth of the second child and the mother is left to raise her wolf children alone, having to figure out how to provide them with the best life she is able to give them. And without having to make them choose between their human and wolf sides.
This film really stands out in so many ways. First of all it’s not spending half the time trying to make up arguments for why it’s right or good to portray a romance like this. It’s not apologizing for portraying monster romance. Despite the evidence of the father being in his werewolf form for the babymaking.
It also shows the challenges of raising two baby shifters that can’t quite make up their mind which they want to be half the time - human or wolf. And then on top of that it tackles the demonisation of the “monster” when one of her kids is heartbroken over the way wolves/monsters are depicted in children’s books that he’s been reading and how they always die in the end. Those things are done with such empathy. I wish this approach was the new norm. This film is such a delight because it not only shows monster romance in a refreshing way, but is also willing to deal with the subject matter without being some dark cautionary tale.
And I love that both the kids chose different paths once they reached puberty. I don’t want to spoil too much, but I think there are so many things done wonderfully in this film. Also for the mother’s character and her determination not to raise her children as simply human, making them give up a part of them forever. She is aware of never being able to fully make up for them what they could have learned from their father, but keeps him alive in the choices she makes for their kids. I have so many feelings about this.
I love men who seem like their only personality trait is loving their wife
