Thousands of Los Angeles city employees, including sanitation workers, lifeguards and traffic officers, walked off the job Tuesday for a 24-hour strike alleging unfair labor practices. Picket lines went up before dawn at Los Angeles International Airport and other locations and a rally was planned for later in the day at City Hall. SEIU Local 721 said airport custodians, heavy duty mechanics and engineers are among the more than 11,000 LA city workers who are striking.

wow players having to stand in lines for a quest because a relevant npc can only talk to one player at a time. is the funniest image on the planet

Avatar

i need to correct this: wow classic doesn’t have any npcs that can only talk to one player at a time. these lines actually formed for a quest npc that players had to kill to complete the objective. knowing that i think this image is even funnier.

My favourite is the guy saying, “This is like being at the dmv”

sooo I ran a lil poll on instagram for what the first thing was that I should draw on my new tablet... and got John Silver from Disney's Treasure Planet as a suggestion a ton?? So, wish granted ☠️

He turned out to be much harder to draw than I thought so I had to do a bunch of sketches, but I kinda resigned to the fact that nobody can draw him on model but glen keane himself anyway. Go watch this again if you haven't for a while!!!! IT'S VERY GOOD

(btw I made a request board here, because this poll thing was fun! Go suggest/upvote requests if you like)

I cannot stress this enough, write it poorly. Write the shittiest draft you possibly can, stick 'ah fuck something happens here and now they're fighting' to get over

Write the worst fucking version you possibly can and stick it in a folder and forget it for a month or two before you look at it again. You know what you have now?

A first draft. And with enough time to think some new thoughts about it, you'll soon end up with a better, second draft! And eventually, you'll end up with something you'd be perfectly okay with letting other people read!

You'll never believe this process works no matter how many times you do it, but it totally does. You just have to drag your brain kicking and screaming to that blank page and get the bones down first.

Write the shit out of that shit.

My apartment building has coin-op laundry in the basement, and on the shelf where people store detergent there are also just enough quarters to start one load in the washer. This is the collective "oh shit I forgot my quarters" bank that anyone can borrow from to start laundry without having to climb all the way back up the goddamn stairs first. These quarters have been steadily used and replaced for multiple years now, and every time I see them I think about how upon such small foundations rests all of human society.

One of my favorite things is taking someone to the Great Lakes for the first time - or describing how you can fly over them and see only hundreds of miles of glittering blue water and no coasts at all; how they have their own Coast Guard (the only lakes to do so); that the Earth's rotation steers their currents; that they're studied using ocean models; that they have wrecked more than 6000 ships - and watch them realize that the word "lake" is misleading and that they had no idea of the size and majesty of them at all.

Some fun facts about her majesty, Lake Superior:

  • It has a surface area of 31,700 sq. miles, roughly the size of South Carolina or Austria.
  • It's incredibly deep and has enough water to cover all of North and South America to a depth of 12 inches.
  • Waves over 30 feet have been recorded.
  • Its deepest point is 1,333 feet, which is the third lowest point in North America
  • Its average temperature is around 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 Celsius), which inhibits bacterial growth in bodies, diminishing bloating and gas, and frequently shipwreck and drowning victims to sink to the bottom and never be recovered.

best thing about tumblr is seeing pictures of Weird Creatures I’d never heard of before

Tufted Pigmy Squirrel. I learned of it recently and was immediately delighted

Oh my goodness!! I’d never heard of it either, and am also delighted!

Reblog to delight your mutuals

If I may delight you further with more unusual squirrels?

The tufted ground squirrel or groove-toothed squirrel (Rheithrosciurus macrotis) native only to the island of Borneo. They have the largest tail-to-body ratio of any mammal- their tail is 130% of it own body. Local legends call them “Vampire Squirrels” and say that they wait in trees for deer to pass beneath and then fall upon them and drink their blood (They actually eat nuts).

The Indian giant squirrel or Malabar giant squirrel (Ratufa indica), native to India. Looks like it was drawn by your favorite sparkle artist with rave-ready colors of gold, magenta, and blue-black/purple.

You may think you’ve seen some cute flying squirrels before… but have you seen the Red and White Giant Flying Squirrel (Petaurista alborufus)?

This… this is a pokemon you guys…

Supposedly a real animal that lives in China.

I had seen the first 2, but I don’t think I’d seen the red and white flying one! It’s lovely! It looks like it’s wearing a fancy mask, or perhaps skull makeup.
