on the very very early hours of the morning yesterday, my little sister (age 21) was detained by police. she has severe mental health issues and has been having a psychiatric episode for a week or two now, getting worse each day. she did not harm anyone nor is she accused of harming anyone, but i don’t want to discuss what she is being accused of since it is an ongoing legal matter. my sister has major depression and her therapist also believes she has borderline personality disorder, though she has not been formally diagnosed yet. we also believe she is on the autism spectrum. during the incident she was arrested for, it is clear that my sister was hallucinating or experiencing a delusion. the detective who arrested her did not know she was mentally ill (he thought she was intoxicated but they found there was nothing in her system; it’s a mental episode!!) he later told me and my dad that he would have baker acted her instead of taking her to jail if he had known. she is now being held in jail. she has no criminal record whatsoever and i am certain she is terrified and scared. due to covid, we can’t visit or even talk to her because all video visits for the next two weeks are completely booked. 

i have tried for two days now to try and get the jail to understand she is having a mental health crisis and needs to be transported to a mental health facility. her attorney is trying to get her to one. as you can imagine, it’s fucking hard to do that.

due to having to hire an attorney experienced in mental health, this situation is very very expensive. many thousands of dollars. but it’s a life or death situation for my sister and we have no choice. we are in huge debt for it now and trying our best to come up with any funds possible to pay for this and the future extensive mental health treatment my sister is going to need once transferred to a facility. if you are able, ANY AMOUNT, please please help. i swear every penny will be used to help my severely ill, sweet, brilliant, beautiful and kind little sister. i’m so scared and don’t know what else to do except constantly cry.

And the mayor has the audacity to ask for peace before releasing the video. Downtown is already closed. There is no reforming police, they are not an institution of public safety, all they can do is cause further harm.

So I’m aware I haven’t really posted anything in a while but I hope this reaches someone. My brother’s name is Efren. Growing up he used to tease and make fun of me, but among all the teasing he also helped raise me along with our mom. When he was little he wanted to be an architect. But his is the story that a lot of Mexican American working class families face: either take the opportunities available to you to attain your dreams, or curtail those in order to take care of your family. He chose his family. After graduating high school he turned down full ride scholarships in order to stay and work to help pay the bills. It was just him, my mom, and me. After a couple of years we got stable enough economically that he was able to go to college, but after graduation we fell on hard times again and instead of finding work in his field or applying to architecture school like he always dreamed, he decided to stick around and help us again. It’s because of his choice to help our family that I was able to go to college too, something that for a time I didn’t think was possible. It’s because of him that I was able to apply to and get accepted into a PhD program in the hopes of becoming a professor. It’s because of him that my mom has a house to call her own. My mom and I owe him everything. Yesterday, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). He’s uninsured. I’m a student, our mom works in childcare. There’s a high success rate for remission if he gets treatment, but we can’t afford it. He’s all me and my mom have, and we can’t lose him. He chose family growing up, and it’s my turn to choose him. Please, any donation helps. I just want him to come home.

First off, thank y’all so so much for the generosity, advice, and kind words y’all have shared. I honestly thought this might get a couple hundred notes I didn’t know it would get over 12k!!!! I’m so incredibly thankful to everyone who’s reblogged and donated and messaged me. Y’all truly don’t know how much it means to me and my family.

Now I wanna post a couple updates here. A lot of y’all pointed out that hospitals should have financial aid or pointed out some charities that could help, and for that I’m very thankful. Yesterday we applied to the hospital financial aid but they told us that he likely only qualifies for a 50% discount on their sliding scale because of income. We’re incredibly thankful for that help of course, but 50% of $30k/month is still $15k/month for treatment. I also spent yesterday applying to different cancer charities and Catholic charities and Latino charities and government assistance but ofc cancer related assistance is in really high demand and a lot of charities are strained thin because of covid and people losing their jobs.

I’m incredibly grateful for y’all’s extreme generosity, so far through the gofundme, Venmo, cashapp, and PayPal we’ve received $8,327.64 and I’m absolutely blown away. I’m in tears writing this I didn’t know people could be so generous. I know times are tough with covid and a lot of families are going through the unimaginable. We’re blown away by everyone’s generosity, I never thought that this would gain as much traction as it did, and Efren also wants to say thank you so much. Words really don’t do justice to the overwhelming amount of support and love that we’ve received though this and though everyone reaching out and offering your kind words and suggestions. When I showed this gofundme to Efren he was speechless, both my mom and I cried because now he gets to stick around just a little bit longer, and that would’ve never happened were it not for everyone’s support. So a million times, thank you.

Now for the (actual) update: Since we heard about the diagnosis, we’ve been applying to a couple of different charities and to St. Francis’, SCCA’s, and UW Medical Center’s financial aid departments respectively. I want to give a quick shout out to people who offered advice and helped us navigate this whole financial situation. Thanks to everyone’s help, Efren’s been able to see a whole army of doctors and hospital staff (Efren says there’s too many to count) and he’s gotten his first round of chemo with more to come in the following weeks. Because of you guys, he’s been able to laugh and talk shit about me for the first time since we got the diagnosis, something I never would’ve thought I’d miss. The bill has gone way WAY down, so now we’re looking at a total of $25k instead of $200k, mostly for meds and the initial emergency room visit.

We never expected this much help and generosity. We’ve set up a payment plan for the remaining amount so it’s not gonna be due all at once – this is a long road to remission as I’m sure some of you may know, so hopefully a combination of payment plans and a diet of ramen packets (I’m kidding mostly) will help us weather this storm. Again, my whole family and I just want to thank each and every single person who’s donated, shared, and sent kind words or prayers our way. God bless you all.

Pervis Payne, a Black man with an intellectual disability, has his execution scheduled on April 9th, 2021.

In 1987, Payne had called the police after discovering the aftermath of a bloody attack on his neighbors. 

Later, he was sentenced to execution. He has been for over 30 years. 

This case has never been properly DNA - tested, and the process of DNA testing only takes a few months at most. His district attorney actively opposes the decision to DNA test his case - even though the evidence from the case is still here. This attorney has refused DNA testing in MANY cases that could have proven innocence. 

In the trial, his past was fabricated - of doing drugs (he didn’t/only barely did, and obviously that doesn’t justify the death sentence regardless of amount), being sexually perverted (he isn’t) and being aggressive, which he wasn’t. He had an intellectual disability that was tested later.

Multiple other suspects exist.

We cannot let another innocent be executed on death row. Pervis Payne suffered 30 years because of the racist “justice” system - he cannot die at the hands of it too.

We cannot let death row be a substitute for justice any longer.

Guys the omnibus has not been passed. They are currently gunning for a continuing resolution until December 18th so they can discuss it next week. It’s fully possible that this will be taken off the omnibus bill before it’s passed. If you wish to do something to discourage this being a part of the omnibus bill then you can contact your congressmen and encourage them to take it off. It’s not much but still.

Unions are why you have 5 day, 40 hour full-time work weeks. Unions are why they have to pay you in actual dollars instead of “company credits” that you can only spend at the company-owned stores. Unions are why there are fucking fire exits at your place of work. Unions are why it’s not okay for your supermarket ground beef to be any percentage human.

You think your company pays you out of the goodness of their hearts? Or even out of “market pressure?” The “job market” is a myth perpetuated by the capitalists. Corporations would pay you nothing if they could get away with it. And you argue “oh, but if they paid me nothing I’d just go to another one.” Wrong. Because to maximize profits, they all want to pay you nothing. Corporations exist to maximize profits while reducing risk for investors. It’s part of their entire function to find ways to cut costs as much as possible, and that includes finding ways to pay you nothing.

Unions are your defense against that. You think all a union does is strike? If you pay union dues, a lot of that is spent on lobbyists in various governments reminding your lawmakers that you have rights as a living human being that a corporation should not be able to stomp all over. Unions hire lawyers so that if you’re fired for bullshit reasons, the union can stand up for you against your boss. They’re called unions because workers are uniting to pool resources so that they can stand up to these corporate overlords with more money than God. Unions exist because you might not have the words, resources, or time to fight workplace injustices all by yourself. That’s the whole fucking point.

And if a business shuts down because a union is striking, it’s because the business was abusing people and didn’t deserve to be in business anyway. Don’t make excuses for the corporations. They already have trillions of dollars and a couple million lawyers to do that for themselves. They don’t need your help.
