im about to start screaming

From what I’ve seen, Among Us fic is often Among Us AUs for other fandoms, so those things are definitely a part of it. People are 100% right when they say there’s often fewer female characters to ship or female characters tend to be worse written, and that’s definitely a part of why it happens, but there’s also a lot of misogyny and other bigotry seeping into fandom spaces. A large amount of it is young people who just haven’t unlearnt that shit they were indoctrinated in, but a large part is also definitely… not. It’s complicated.

Here are the results for the same search with crossovers excluded. This doesn't entirely account for rpf because of inconsistent tagging, but I believe a lot of that was caught by the exclusion as well. The difference is absolutely still there, though gen seems to be the most common--unsurprising, considering the perfect opportunity to just make a bunch of OCs and put them in a tense situation.

A similar vein is when you're scrolling the f/f tag and all the wlw ships are just a way to get rid of the female love interests to make room for the mlm ship. There is nothing that fills me with more rage (okay thats a lie there are lot of worse things but I still dont like it)

Like, on one hand its good we're moving past the trope of villifying or killing off female characters to make room for gay/oc/self ships but like halfassedly pushing them into wlw relationships with no development or chemistry or even screentime and then maintagging them is a special kind of infuriating

Just to go back to the main point ... It literally doesn't matter if people are writing m/m with ocs for Among Us. I meant to say this back when the post was going around ages ago but never got around to it.

Like, it may shock some to hear this, but "women are writing too much m/m" is a recurring moral panic in fandom! It manages to be both sexist ("we have to monitor what women are writing and reading for their own good!") and homophobic (because let's be real, it shouldn't be so amazing that highly queer fandom spaces are mostly writing queer fiction - and the people who do this never go to Wattpad or FFN and come back with data to show how homophobic fandom is for mostly writing het. They generally give the impression that they would find m/f to be more progressive full stop because it has women in it).

There are a number of reasons that both formal and informal studies have found for AO3 types choosing to write m/m over f/f outside of specific character dynamics of specific canons. I think the most common tend to be "I'm into men and I think that's sexy", "I'm concerned about the response if I do XYZ with female characters", and "female/AFAB characters make these concepts feel too close to me".

These are all perfectly valid reasons to choose to write m/m, and frankly it creeps me out when the moral panic comes around again and these people are instructed by implication to write smut that doesn't turn them on, scenarios that will make people judge them as misogynist (lady whump? OH NO), and/or fics that trigger them just to prove their feminist bona fides to a hostile and bad faith reader. This is exactly the kind of thing that spurs people to pair off the canon love interests to get them out of the way and maintag them as though they gave them any development or chemistry.

If you actually want to read about female characters, you do not want people to write about them as a form of "eating their vegetables"!

Signed, someone who likes f/f enough to genderbend m/m couples into it

I’ve also noticed that a lot of people who advocate for sapphic shipping will still get up in arms whenever it’s a pairing they don’t like, or generally if it’s just not being done on their terms. Sort of an extension of the “eat your vegetables!!” mentality, but when someone actually has a taste for broccoli they’ll get upset about that and demand they eat kale instead.

And trust me, I lament the dearth of f/f pairings in fic as much as anyone. I’m very familiar with that feeling of “out of these eight fics tagged with them as a ship only one of them is well-written and actually gives them the main focus, I suppose I’ll just read that one ten times.” But yeah, if you want to encourage people to take an interest browbeating them and then getting nitpicky about how they enjoy it isn’t going to help with that.

spiderman’s uncle said “with great power comes great responsibility” to mean “use your power as a white man to reform this racist patriarchy we’re in” but tobey maguire responded “you’re not my dad! I’m going to wear a mask” and then uncle ben DIED.

why is doing things so hard ? i made all those study plans and now the next step is to start working and somehow i can’t. And obviously having adhd doesn’t help, but i’m getting so tired of this. so fucking tired of never sticking with my plans and then doing work in a panicked state.
