Let's talk about anxiety, travel, and the illusion of normalcy. As some of you know, I have a pretty severe anxiety disorder, one amplified by change, unfamiliar surroundings, pressure, and food. But I'm also an author, one who needs to be able to travel. One of the tricks I've found, a small way to create a sense of stability, is to have a good that goes with me. This is my breakfast. Peanut butter and banana on toast with a cup of breakfast tea. Whether I'm in Nashville, Edinburgh, New York, or on tour, it's what I eat every morning. Starting my day with something simple and familiar helps create a small sense of continuity, a patch of solid ground. It seems small--in many ways it is small--but it helps me stay healthy and calm so I can get to all those book events.
