What You’re Missing When You Say, “I Only Buy Local Meat”

Is “local meat” better? What about the meat at farmers markets? Many of us have asked or heard these questions, and with all the seemingly conflicting information out there, we wanted to clear some things up: Factory farms are local. Odds are good that there is a large-scale factory farm relatively close to where you live. The distance meat and other animal products travel says nothing about the way the animals were raised. On the vast majority of farms, animals are subjected to extreme confinement, mutilations without painkillers, and a ruthless slaughter. Animals are still abused on small farms. All animals raised for meat will face the same violent and unnecessary death. Hatcheries that supply all sorts of “happy” egg farms still grind up live male chicks or suffocate them in garbage bags. And cows on small organic dairies still have their babies ripped away from them to be sold for veal. You’d do much more to protect the planet by ditching meat altogether. While “food miles” (the distance food travels before it reaches our plates) do affect the carbon footprint of a food, compared to the resources required to produce the meat in the first place, they make up a small percentage (as low as 11 percent) of the total emissions of that food. No matter what it says on the package, animal agriculture is one of the leading contributors to climate change. – Ready to make a big difference for animals and the planet? 986)  The only thing that is holding me back from going back to my eating disorder is my veganism. To most people in my life I’m the only vegan they know, so I don’t want to give them the false idea that vegans lack nutrition and are unhealthy. I want to show them that it’s possible to be vegan and strong, but I want to relapse so many times.
